Late April to mid June to avoid the city heat and bigger crowds, or September. I suggest you do stay in Naples (see Pompeii) and then ferry over to Sorrento, one of the best cities on the coast. Some of the others like Positano need a little updating (kinda of lost in a 60's retro - not good)and Capri - I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Unless you have your own private boat, it's like a cattle car going there. Personally, I prefer the Liguria and especially Santa Margarita. I was there this past August and neither the heat, nor the crowds were really that bad at all. I played golf almost every day.

Dear Eddie,

We did the exact trip this past end of May to beginning of June. The weather was much warmer than expected. We wished we had gone earlier in May to have avoided some of the crowds in Venice, Florence & Rome.

We stayed in Sorrento for our last 4 nights and thought it was a great decision. I said to my husband, that no matter what the water temp was I was diving in after being so hot in Rome. (It was cool but doable - my husband went in every day)

The water in Sorrento is a little cooler than down in Positano, or so I'm told.

Depending on how many nights you have, Sorrento is a great base for getting to Capri and Pompeii.

Hire a private driver and let him do the driving down the coast and you will have a very relaxing, stress free way to end your trip.

It was wonderful.

We swam in Nerano-Marina del Cantone (north of Positano and south of Sorrento) in late October. Hotel owner said there was usually swimming there until December.

I have been to the Amalfi coast in May and September. May was nicer than September (it rained a lot.) Although the weather was great in May, I didn't think the water was warm enough to swim, although I saw some that did. I didn't see anyone swimming in the ocean or the hotel pool in Sept. One day it was stormy and I needed a jacket, the next day it was unbelievably hot. I would try late May. Ditto on the driver, that is what I always do. Enjoy!
