Best Scotland Villages
What would you vote to be the best little or unknown villages in Scotland? We are going in June and are curious if there is a great non-touristy town we should see.
|
Try Crovie, near Gardenstown east of Banff.
|
TuckH, now that's what I'm talking about. We would have driven right by it and not known it was there.
Anyone else? |
We had a grand time, or times at Kirkcudbright. Although it does work to have visitors, ie. tourists, still it's a grand town.
|
I could tell you, but then I'd have to shoot you:)
A random selection:- Eyemouth Kelso Anstruther Carnoustie St Fillan's Alford Tarbert Plockton Gairloch Port Charlotte Nethy Bridge Embo Stromness See what you think http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/index.html |
I would also add a couple of unusual destinations - thatchey roofey villages in Scotland no less - to the list (but this is dangerous stuff - reference the Cinque Terre post-Steves.)
Fortingall - reputed birthplace of Pontius Pilate, home of amazing ancient Yew tree. Add in a drive up Glen Lyon and you've got a fine day. Swanston - within the city of Edinburgh, part way up the Pentland Hills behind the city. RL Stevenson dwelt here, very attractive whitewashed cottages. A walk in the hills from/to Swanston is a grand day if the weather cooperates. I would also mention Gifford, in the Lammermuir Hills of East Lothian - a fine planned village with a nice town green. You can make an excellent day "loop" drive from Edinburgh over the Lammermuirs to the coast, returning via the coastal towns (Dunbar etc.) to the city. |
