Best scenic drive from Fussen to Salzburg?

We are wondering what will be the best drive from Fussen to Salzburg to experience the best scenery. Driving the route that goes by Innsbruck was suggested but Michelin seems to recommend driving the Munich route. Looking at my Michelin map I noticed the topography along the Innsbruck route appears to be more mountainous. Can anyone share details of their driving experience? Any special towns to stop by along the way?

Either way will take up most all of your day.

Dropping down into Austria (Innsbruck) would be the more scenic IMO. Using the Austrian autobahn, you'll need to buy a vignette (sticker). The autobahn follows the valley floor, mountains left and right. I'd stay away from the Munich route because of the potential for traffic backups.

You could stay on the autobahn all the way back into Germany and out again - or if time permits - leave the autobahn at Wörgl, then past St Johann and Bad Reichenhall. Very scenic!

Hi Nini,

I think that this route is best for both scenery and speed.

Exit Fuessen on the B17 toward Reutte. Transfer to the B179 SB toward Reutte.
Continue on the B179 to around Nassereith, where it connects to the B189.

If you like winding mountain roads, go EB on B189 and connect to the A12 EB toward Salzburg at Telfs.

Otherwise, take the B189 WB toward Imst and connect to the A12 EB there.

Near Worgl, take the B178 EB to the Austrian Border. The road changes to the B21.

St. Johann in Tirol is a nice little town.

Buy a vignette (road tax sticker) at any gas station the border. You never know when an Austrian will suddenly become a highway.

Follow the B21 to Bad Reichenall and pick up the B20 NB to where it meets the A8.

Take the A8 EB to Salzburg.

You will need an International Driver's Permit in Austria.

Michelin gives you the quickest route unless you go to "Options" and change to "avoiding tolls" or "discovery".

Enjoy your visit.

Thank you Tuck! We are aware of the need to purchase the vignette and DH has the international DL also. this drive will be longer than what we imagined but it sounds very scenic.

Thanks Ira for the detailed driving route. No, the winding mountain drive does not sound like a good plan so we will follow the other route. We read your positive review of Am Moos B&B and we booked it for our stay in Salzburg.

Hall in Tirol, just outside of Innsbruck. It's about the half point - good for a lunch break.
