best route from Florence to Pienza
 

Our first full day of driving in Tuscany will be driving from our rented villa outside Florence to Pienza where we will stay for a few days. It's not so far so no need to hurry.

What is the best way to go, what towns should we visit along the way?
We will already have done day trips to Siena, Greve and San Gimignano.

Any suggestions for a good place to stop for lunch?
We like small and local and tasty real food...

It depends on where outside of Florence your villa is.

go to one of the mapping sites like viamichilin.it.

enter your starting and ending addresses, and any other variables - most scenic route, for example.

they will give you a route, [or several] plus ideas for restaurants, sights, along the way.

Of course it depends---be specific.

The most scenic road is through the Crete Senesi. It's the SR2 that goes from Siena to San Quirico d'Orcia. Once there, it's only a short drive to Pienza.
If you don't mind driving small roads, a nice one from Firenze to Siena is the SR222 in the Chianti area, passing villages such as Greve in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, ...
But once you're on the SR2 you will only have to enjoy the very nice scenery of the Crete Senesi. It's here that you can see the typical Tuscan light because of the variety in colors of the soil. It's a rural area with, from time to time, a single fattoria with a line of cypresses in front. Picture perfect postcards!

Sounds lovely, thank you! - to be more specific our villa is in Via Larione up above Piazzale Michelangelo so we can get out to SR222 quite easily (or it looks like it from google maps). We'll try to get away quite early and have all day to get to Pienza so there will be time to stop at places along the way... We'd love a good recommendation for lunch!

Pizza!

No recommendation on the way but there's a little place in Pienza that we love. It's called Osteria Sette di Vino. It's on Piazza di Spagna in the very city centre. They only have a few tables but you can also eat on their outside terrace (sidewalk more or less).

Arezzo is about half way. I've never been but it gets good recommendations from people who have.

Arezzo is indeed south of Florence but it's very far east, and not on the scenic road.
