best route between venice & rome

We are new travellers and will be independantly travelling between Venice & rome. Can someone tell us the best Route to take? We have only a one night stop before arriving in Rome. Where do you suggest we stop? Florence?

On one level, your question is virtually a no-brainer: you should travel by train, and yes, Florence is the leading logical choce for a one-night stop in between. But there are some alternative answers. See http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34652812

Welcome to the forum.

Hi M,

It would be helpful if you gave us your full itinerary.

A car migh be useful - or not.

With only one night to spend, I'm not sure that the bigger picture of the itinerary would influence my answer. But the number and ages of persons traveling together could. A car could save a small amount of money for parties of 4 or more. And maybe useful with some families with children or others traveling with special needs.

How many people traveling together?

Any preference for car or train?
