I really like Context Rome--don't think anyone mentioned this book.

I love Knopf Mapguides - Rome
The book is easy to carry and is divided into neighborhoods with fold out maps that are very easy to read - especially under a street lamp at night. Each section highlights points of interests, restaurants, bars and nightlife, and shopping. I am also a big fan of the DK Top 10, too. |
Normanoromano, thanks for the nice words about my Rome book list on SlowTrav - yup, that's me.
I need to update my list. I have read and used "Not Built in a Day," and I generally like it, but his opinions are sometimes ill-informed. But you are right, it is a good architectural guide, provided one takes his pronouncements with a grain of salt. I love the new Pallas Guide to Rome, by Lucentini, but the maps are pretty hopeless. I am with you: I carry a small paper bag with clothes, and a steamer trunk of books. But out on the street, I still think the Michelin Green Guide is the best, along with Masson's Companion Guide to Rome. Yrs, Robert |
I've just returned from Rome and will be going back in 2 weeks. I used the DK for my visit last week but have ordered the Rough Guide for next time.
I've never really been a big fan of the DK. OK, so they show colour cut away pictures but they tend to be rather brief and don't really tell you whether its worth a visit or not. Rough Guide used to be for back-packers and extreme budget travellers, but they've now broadened their appeal. I like the straight talking as it tells you exactly what is a waste of time and effort. |
Hi
I used DK eyewitness guides when I went there last year and I think that was pretty good for our visit. Feel free to check out my trip report with pictures and links on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy.htm . Also check out my interactive Google map on http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy_map.htm which shows attractions, restaurants etc :d Have a great trip. Great information! So, which guidebook has the best, most useful maps for walking around Rome?

Let's Go Rome has served me well in the past. It's completely revised each year, and it's packed with useful and amusing information.
