If you want romance, old Paris and privacy, ask for one of the private room at Laperouse. It is a 19th century building on the Seine. On the 1rst floor (2nd to you, there is a series of small, private dining rooms. The door is closed throughout the meal and you ring for the waiter. There is a red velvet couch, tapestries and murals...they are candle lit. The food is good, around 700-800 FF menu, plus wine.

For really excellent, top quality food, try Jamin, on rue de Longchamps. It is a little jewel box of a place. More expensive than above, and without the novelty factor of a private dining room. Jamin +33 01 45 53 00 07 fax 01 45 53 00 15. Laperouse tel +33 1 43 26 68 04 or +33 1 43 26 90 14. I have been to both, Jamin is better for food, Laperouse better for romance.

That sounds hard to beat (la Perouse), but not every couple will have the same idea about romance - - if excitement figures into the equation, and money were no object, I would consider Chateau d'Esclimont - - www.slh.com - - including the helicopter to take us to their private helipad - - and of course, a room there for after dinner.

Hard to beat the view and the history at the Tour d'Argent, even if the menu hasn't changed since they invented duck.
