Best plan to beat jet-lag

Ambien has been a lifesaver for me. Some experience negative side effects; I have not. I travel overseas several times a year and refuse to travel without it. But I can't stress enough that if you plan on trying it, talk to your doctor, get a prescription, and try it a few nights before you leave to see how you feel. Finding out that you have a negative side effect while on the plane or on vacation is not a good thing!

No harm having a nap on the train after arrival to catch up lost sleep - you should be feeling better by the time you see your friend at Galway.

I bet you your friend will be so excited to see you and will keep you awake for the rest of the day!

Listen to JanisJ. That's what I do and it works perfectly. When you get on the plane, change your watch to destination time. Also, try to get a pillow behind the small of your back as well as your neck. Drink water, too....and most important, stay up until after dinner on day 1. You'll wake up the next morning ready to go. Have fun!

What works for one person does not work for another. AndreaD, that's great that you can stay up on Day 1 and be rarin' to go on Day 2, but not everyone can do that, certainly not me.

Last year we flew from Montreal to London, then London to Berlin, took the U-Bahn from one end of Berlin to the other, and had dinner at my aunt's place. I did not sleep all night or day, and I did not feel rested and like myself until the 5th day into the trip. That's why I nap off and on the first day, so I can be rested on Day 2.

Please don't imply that one single method works. That's why I suggested that the OP listen to his/her own body and decide whether to nap upon arrival or not.

I agree fully with janisj...though I do tend to take a nap on arrival. But a short one!

I'm just adding one more suggestion -- use your jet lag to your advantage when you can (ie, we purposefully didn't "adjust" in Hawaii because we wanted to be awake at 5am every day!). Traveling east, you'll be awake later than usual, so if there's a late-night activity you want to do, like a great pub, schedule it for Day 2, when you're more likely to stay up later and enjoy it more.

Melatonin is much gentler than Ambien and works well to get you to sleep, usually within a half hour you are yawning and falling asleep but still able to get up when needed. It is a natural vitamin in that your body naturally makes melatonin anyway.

I couldn't get melatonin to work for me and I tried it on three different occassions.

Tylenol PM and other OTC sleep aids do nothing for me as well. Dramamine will, on occassion, give me about an hour or so of sleep.

In the previous posts, I didn't see my two cardinal rules for avoiding jet lag:
1. No alcohol before or during the flight.
2. Lots of water while on board (1 liter+).

You'll be tired when you land if you can't sleep but you won't feel terrible if you follow these two rules.

Me and DH (dumb husband) do drink on the plane. After checking into hotel we go outside and walk around and get some day light.

Everyone has their own methods. I have never slept on a plane in my life (even medicated, which I do recommend). And am extremely negatively affected by changing time zones and jet lag.

I allow a couple days at the start of any trip to Europe and give in to it. Nap, have nice meals, some wine, lots of fresh air and loads of walking around. Kick back at the hotel as needed.

that said, it is definitely a "to each his own" situation.

If you choose to try any kind of medication, prescription or over the counter, try it at home several times before your trip. An overseas plane ride is no time to experiment with the unknown!!

My doctor likes to travel and can't sleep on the plane (like me), so he gave me a prescription for Lunesta. I tried one at home with no problems and so took one on the plane that let me sleep soundly 3-1/2 hours and doze another half hour or so. Then I took one the first night, slept soundly through the night, and was good to go from then on.

Without anything, a shortish nap on arrival day helps me; but I have a problem with waking up in the wee hours and not being able to go back to sleep. I'm not a pill popper, but I loved using those little pills.

Don't fly coach. Set your watch to the time you are going to as soon as you get on the plane and get geared to the time you are going to. When you arrive do what you would do at their time. I have never suffered from jet lag to date.

How about... First Class only. Daytime flight only. Luxury 5* hotels on both ends of the journey with private car drop off/pick up.

I'll never suffer jet-lag.

I, too, suffer jet lag pretty badly.
So among the things I have tried: flying business class(it helps), no alcohol, alcohol, lots of water and ativan. I am trying melatonin and resetting my watch this time flying to Europe from SF. I vote for no alcohol and a medication of some kind which permits sleep. I also vote for First or business class.
