Best Places to Visit in March?
 

I have the questionable fortune of celebrating my anniversary in March each year. Next year I would like to celebrate a special anniversary in a great place - but where will the weather be nice (not chilly and rainy) at that time of year?

Suggestions will be most appreciated!

If you mean in Europe then I would suggest Sicily and Malta.

Yes - I did mean Europe, but I am open to other suggestions.

My husband and I went to Venice for a week in March. It was magical. Temperatures were in the 50's during the day and cooler at night, and we were lucky with no rain. I think it is the most romantic city in the world!

I've been to London in March and had a great time. Found plenty of stuff to do indoors when it rained or the chill got to me. Dress in layers and bring an umbrella.

I think I'd have to agree with Bob if you want to have a reasonable chance of the sunny weather in Europe...not sure if very southern Spain would fit the bill but, of course, if you want to almost BET on warm weather then somewhere in the Pacific Islands might be a better idea unless you want Australia. Europe would be a lot closer I suppose and perhaps cheaper to do.

We spent the 1st 2 weeks of March in Andalucia this year and had marveloud weather. Hiked in shorts and short sleeved shirts. Sat out in the evenings in Seville just wearing light sweater. Sunny every day we were there.

We took out kids to Italy in March of last year and had fabulous weather. We spent a little over a week in Rome, then drove up through Tuscany to the CT, and out of Pisa home. Even though I had us prepared with parkas and umbrellas, it never rained once and we had perfect walking weather. We just layered with light sweaters. Would do it again. The sights were not nearly as crowded and we had not hit high season so all rates were lower everywhere. I think your fortune is not suspect at all!!

My daughter went to Italy in March with my mother. I just flipped through my daughter's photo album and saw plenty of pictures of them wearing nice tee shirts, sometimes with a light jacket, sometimes not. They went to Santa Margherita Ligure and the hydrangeas were in full bloom as were other flowers. So I suppose you could take this as saying Italy is lovely in March!

My husband and I took the family to the UK one March (kids' spring break) and while the roses weren't out, of course, the country had an "early spring" feel to it, rather than "tail end of winter" feel. We brought lightweight wool sweaters with us and never felt chilled. It was a good trip because we weren't hemmed in by hordes of tourists as we have been during June trips. The lack of tourist packs and the more temperate weather (see currently running post about Europe's heat wave!) makes me think your March wedding was very well timed!

These are great ideas - because we have usually been in the Northeast USA in March, I had become glum about it - plus our actual wedding was in Michigan in the rain and our honeymoon was in Toronto, also in the rain. Spain is beginning to sound intriguing.

Axelrod, if you are looking in that direction, take a look at the island of Madeira, off the Portuguese coast. It is temperate all year round and ruggedly beautiful.

Weather in March is always unpredictable, but I second the suggestion for London. I was there a few years ago in very early March, and daffodils were blooming in the parks, we had occasional drizzle and mildish temperatures where a lined raincoat and a sweater underneath were just fine.

I travel every year in March for at least a week in Europe. Three times in Paris, and the weather was at times dark and overcast, but no rain to speak of and very easy to get around (no real crowds and not unbearable to be outside 40s-50s). London was bitterly chilly and we both came home with bronchial pneumonia (damn double decker bus tour!) and we're from Boston, so we're used to cold; there's just something bonechilling about the cold there. Same thing in Ireland. Last year in Italy (Amalfi Coast and Rome) it was 70s and sunny (I was in short sleeves only in Rome, and never more than a light coat at night on the coast) but a week after we got home it snowed on Easter in Rome, so go figure.

I visited Paris and Normandy the last week of March this year. London and Jersey the last week of March the year before.

Great weather both times!

In London, March is a drier month.
