Best places to stay in Lisbon

Hi We are a party of 6, aged 50 to 60, (quite fit ) and are looking for advise on the best places/areas to stay in Lisbon.

Thanks

My favorite area of the city is around the Jardim do Principe Real to enjoy the unique ambience of the city. For a heavy sightseeing agenda, somewhere between Rossio & the Elevador de Santa Justa is slightlly more convenient to much of public transportation, but it's more touristy. Next time I go back to Lisbon I want to stay in Lapa, for its beautiful residential streets and seaviews, but there is no two ways about it that it is a more complicated location for typical sightseeing unless you are willing to sometimes take taxis (which are very cheap in Lisbon).

I personally would skip staying in the Alfama (too steep, too inconvenient for metro) or right in the Baixa-Chiado area, but only because there are so many tourists it has distorted the feel of the neighborhoods. But other people like it.

You should stay, as central as possible, in order to to be able to walk to the major old city sites. There are plenty o f offer along Avenida da Liberdade and Restauradores Square.

Look at both Avenida Palace and Sofitel, both very well located.

We loved the Avenida Palace.

We stayed at Hotel Real Palacio last Spring. It was very nice and a great deal. Its not downtown but five minutes from the Sao Sebastiao metro stop, so ten minutes to downtown on metro. The neighborhood is quiet at night, lots of restaurants in the area and just a couple of blocks to a giant Corte Ingles so you can buy anything imaginable. Anyway this place was a deal for the money. A similar place in the U.S. would cost four times as much.

How is the Lisbon Marriott as far as location goes? This would be our first trip and I have a 7 night Award Certificate to use.

Where is it located, Deb? It's probably fine, but the business district of Lisbon is not very pretty, IMHO.

I stay in the Marriott every year for a two week trip to the University that is across the street. It's a great location for that, but not much else. But there are two metro stops, equidistant from the hotel. One on the blue line (Laranjeiras) and one on the yellow line (Cidade Universitaria). About a ten minute walk. And then about a ten minute ride to restauradores or Baixa/Chiado And cabs are cheap. The hotel is very comfortable, standard issue Marriott, not much charm, with a recently updated fitness room with new equipment (YAY!!!). The breakfast buffets are great.

Just in case you or anyone else is going to stay there, there is a little gem of a restaurant about 5 minutes away on foot, tucked out of sight. Called the Carvoeiro da Palma, it is in this tiny old neighborhood that was for some reason left standing when a major north-south divided highway sliced through town. Absolutely fresh delicious grilled fish, very simple, decent house wine. You can eat there for under 15 euros and be very happy.

Thank you for the feedback lreynold. Sounds like it's really not what we are looking for but since it is with an Award certificate, we are limited. May have to use Certificate elsewhere and find a different, better located hotel in Lisbon and pay for it.

If I were a tourist in Lisbon for just a few days, I would not stay there. I would go somewhere like the Hotel Borges for a moderate price, the new Pousada in Praca Comercio for a great location and a more upscale, renovated historical building, or Hotel Principe Real for a price in between those two. The last one is kind of a boutique-y hotel and is right near the lovely garden Principe Real mentioned by one of the other posters.

I also like the Real Palacio described above, but it is in a residential neighborhood and not near many of the places you will want to visit, except for the Gulbenkian Museum. It is only a fwe blocks from there.
