Best places for spring flowers

What are some of your favorite cities to see spring flowers in Europe? And what kind of flowers is each city or region really known for? Of course, there is the Netherlands, but what about some other options?

Wisteria and lilacs, in Paris and Burgundy, early to mid-May. My favorites!

In the south of France, I love the fields of red poppies (and of course, there's all that lavender, but I've never been there at the right time of year to see it) and also the roses planted at the ends of the rows in the vineyards.

And I know it's springtime in Paris, no matter what the weather, when little girls and old men stand on street corners selling bunches of lily-of-the-valley on May 1.

The Dordogne in April and May, when all the fruit orchards are in bloom and the wildflowers are over all the fields.

The daffodils in March in the UK are ubiquitous in March. Kensington Palace gardens in particular are brilliant.

Paris--iris, wisteria, clematis, roses (by mid-May at least). Go to the Bagatelle in the Bois de Bologna, Monet's house and garden. There are several other smaller gardens in the city itself. Most any guidebook will list them. I leave for Amsterdam on the 11th of April. Tulip season! We are also going to visit several gardens in Menton and Nice. Though many people would not be interested, I will take notes on the gardens and report back for those who are.

I'll be interested, PJK!

I have been surprised whenever we've traveled to Paris in March at the things that are in bloom--cherries, tulips, daffodils. Even in mid-March.

When do the mimosas bloom? Oh--another Provence/Gard memory: sweet flowering almond. Oh la la, they are beautiful and smell lovely.

The Algarve from Feb to May. We just returned and it was great. The wildflowers are late this year, but the whole area is just scented with the most enticing smells. Adding to the wildflowers are orange blossoms, lavendar, rosemary and bougainvillea.
