Here is an excerpt from my Rome trip report that deals only with restaurants:

"Our favorite restaurants were Pierluigi (Piazza de Ricci - very close, need reservations), Al Fontanone (46 Piazza Trilussa) and Da Gildo (31 Via della Scala) (both in Trastevere). We also ate at Insalata Ricci (85 L. go dei Chiavani - very close, good, cheap), La Carbonara (in Campo de Fiori - nice atmosphere and very close by, quite good food, lots of tourists), Hostario Giulio (19 via della Barchetta - decent). Maura recommended a restaurant called Al Ciack at 21 Vicolo dei Cinque (also in Trastevere) which looked great but my youngest son panicked when he looked at the menu. We would have loved to have eaten there. The other restaurant we missed that has RAVE reviews everywhere is Al Bric, which is between the apt and Campo de Fiori on the right hand side of the street. For some reason, we never made it there either."

I don't know why Pierluigi doesn't get talked about on here. I thought it was much better than La Carbonara, and in the same price range and close by. Although, Carbonara is popular because if its prime real estate on Campo dei Fiori.

I have been using the same "star" method to compile a list for our trip next month to London and Paris. Of the places you mentioned we have been to Da Baffeto, der Pallaro, Il Bacaro, and L'Orso 80. While we enjoyed our meals at all of them our favorites were der Pallaro and Il Bacaro.

A place not often mentioned here, but one that we enjoyed was Obika (Piazza Firenze - corner via del Prefetti). It is a mozzerella bar, with tasting plates of some of the best buffalo mozzerella out there. It was fairly new when we were there last March, with a modern, hip space, however it was not expensive and we did not need a reservation.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the contributions - maybe I can update my list to accommodate your suggestions.

Ps - jg, I have recently posted (here) the Uk Independents guide to the most romantic restaurants in the UK which contain a few London restaurants and I have similar recommendations which I can post here - that said you might already be weighed down with recommendations!
