Best place to stay in countryside outside of Paris

Hello: We are going to Paris for six days at the end of October and want to stay 3 days afterward in the countryside outside of Paris. Is it best to go to the Loire Valley (we want a small, interesting town that we can chill out in and maybe take a bus trip to other towns) - or is there a small, unique town that is easy to get to in Burgundy that is recommended? We will not be renting a car - would prefer to take the train/and or bus from Paris to our destination and then take local buses to other places. Also, is there a recommended B&B or small hotel in the town?

Thanks, Wellfleet Bev

Hi W,

In Burgundy, Auxerre is a very interesting, medieval town about 1:30 hr by train from Paris, well worth a couple of days.

Beaune and vicinity is worth a few days.

The Loire area is worth three days, but you'll need a car to go from place to place, and you may want to change your base each day. A stop at Chartres on the way would be very nice, too. We did this some years ago, getting a new hotel each night as we drove west along the way, but driving back to Paris on the last day. It's off season, so you won't have trouble finding a room.

Provence is just a few hours by high-speed train - in October i'd forego the oft soggy and cool Loire and Burgundy and head south to Avignon by TGV train, at speeds of up to 186 mph - Avignon is a great base with easy bus or rail trips to Arles, Pont-du-Bard, Les Baux, Saint Remy, Nimes, etc.

And Avignon at that time of year should be relaxing and the weather should be primo here (even though French weather has been rather topsy-turvy this summer)

Thanks, everyone, for your input.
We have decided to spend the last 3 days in Aix En Provence - we will be taking the fast train from Paris.

Does anyone know of a good small hotel right in the town of Aix En Provence?

Also, do we need to make reservations for the fast train before we go? How do we do this?

Thanks, Wellfleet Bev

Train tickets:

Indicate pickup in France, decline the insurance and you can print your tickets.
