Best place to fly into

I have been to Italy once before, but on a package tour. I am headed there with some friends in the spring of '04 and was wondering which would be the best city to fly into.
Thanks so much!

I think that Rome would be one of the cheapest, but as for the "best" it would depend on where in Italy you wanted to go.
If you do an "open jaw" you could fly into, Venice, and train to Rome, and fly out of there. Or some other similar combination.

lauren, what is your departure city and where in Italy are you planning to visit?

Coming from the San Francisco area, I have usually found the least expensive flights into Milan, but that may differ according to where you are leaving from.

We are planning on ending in Rome most likely...although it could turn into Vienna. We kind of have three weeks to dink around, but really want to stick to Italy.
We are flying out of Denver

I think you can either

1. Go for the least expensive round-trip to Rome and figure that if it costs you to get back there, you've at least saved something on the transatlantic flight.

2. Check on open jaws going into Venice, Milan, Vienna, wherever, and out of Rome.

Checking online sites will get you started by telling which airlines fly in and out of those cities, and Denver.
