Best Place to eat in Grindelwald to celebrate our Anniversary?

We will be in Grindelwald for our 25th Anniversary. Anyone have any recommendations as to the yummiest restaurants?

Oh dear, this doesn't look good! No replies!

Are there no good restaurants in Grindelwald?

Doesn't have to be fancy just has to be really good food, memorable atmosphere.

There are many more good restaurants than bad here in Switzerland. Check out this list of restaurants available in Grindelwald, sorted by cuisine.

Thanks Schuler, looks like a great site which includes a lot of URLs to check out!

Do you have any place in Grindelwald that you would recommend?

Sorry Wrenwood. I live in Central Switzerland and rarely go to Grindelwald. There's too much beauty at my front door.

Hopefully someone else with more Grindelwald experience can help you.

I have had a number of nice dinners in Grindelwald, but the two places that come to mind for a special occasion would be the terrace at Hotel Bodmi, above the town with lovely views across the valley to the glacier gorge and Wetterhorn:

http://www.bodmi.ch/

Also the terrace at Hotel Spinne, which is in town; the terrace is behind the restaurant (off the street) and offers views up toward the Eiger north face:

www.spinne.ch

These recommendations reflect my preference for dining outside, so will only work if you have a nice evening. For indoor dining, the Rotisserie restaurant at the Spinne looks nice (see the website) but it might be only for hotel guests; I'm not sure. We ate in the Mercato restaurant there on a rainy night and it was OK but no views.

Wrenwood,

Sorry I can't give you a specific restaurant. But perhaps I can give you some hope!

My husband and I were in Grindelwald some time back, and still recall one of our "best meals ever, anywhere" there (yes, we play that game often!). We were there during wild game season in the Fall, and had wild boar. Unbelievably good!

We had some excellent food in Grindelwald, and chose all our restaurants by "sight". Whatever looked good, we made a reservation. So although I don't have a recollection of a specific name, I'll bet you'll have some wonderful choices. Checking with your hotelier will give you some good info. as well. The Swiss are very proud of their hospitality professionalism, as well they should be!

Happy travels,

LisaG

We liked the Mercato, Restaurant Oberland and the Memory Bistro in Hotel Eiger - good food at all of them, but not what I'd consider special occasion type restaurants.

Don't know if we can plan on an outdoor table ~ it will be September 22. Would love a place with a view though.

We are staying in an apartment owned by Hotel Kirchbuhl, and since they have restaurants I hesitate to ask them for a "special place", maybe insinuating theirs aren't special enough.

Will we have time to check out restaurants when we are there? We arrive there only two days before our anniversary, and our anniversary falls on a Saturday, so I'm concerned about if I would need to make reservations at this time of year ( Sept 22)

If you stay at the Hotel Kirchbühl you should not bother to look elsewhere. They have an excellent restaurant (actually, they have 2 more good restaurants) "La Marmite". It is listed in the "Guide bleu".

No need to make reservations in advance in September. If all else fails, I agree with the recommendation of the restaurant in the Hotel Spinne.

I.

Looks like one of the better restaurants was right under my nose in "La Marmite"!

Appreciate the second recommendation of Hotel Spinne, one of the great things about this board and Trip Advisor is that when several people say something nice, one starts to feel easier about making decisions.

Glad to hear that reservations shouldn't be necessary in late September. Maybe the weather will be warm enough to at least sit out and have drinks. I think I saw the sun sets around 7:30 then?

Thought I'd bring this back to see if anyone could help me out with the question of attire. If we eat in Hotel Spinne or someplace nice on a Saturday night, what will other people be wearing?

Hi

I just came back from our 5 days stay in Grindelwald , and frankly did not find any good restaurants there. But since it's your wedding anniversary i would suggest going down to Interlaken and having something there. It's only a 40 min train ride from Grindelwald .The last train frm Interlaken OST is at 11. 20 pm ,so u can even still get back. But pls check the train timing again on sbb.com

I've stayed in Grindelwald several times at the nice little Alpina Hotel, and I must say that I was as happy with their food as anywhere we tried. I remember one nicer hotel which we were told was the BEST in town so four of us went. My main memory was asking for a wine list and being told there was no list -- did we want red or white. When we said we wanted red, they came to the table with a bottle of the only choice, uncrewed the cap and poured it out. I remember the brand name was Dole and we joked about it being red pineapple juice. Awful.
I don't think of Grindelwald as a great dining spot generally. But especially our various Chinoise and/or cheese fondues at the Alpina were really nice.

Without sampling about a dozen of the many, how can anyone say which one is BEST?

If you want to blow a few hundred $$ there are several place that can take your paper.

Whether or not you went to THE BEST is a question that defies an answer.

I'm sure we'll find a nice place in Grindelwald. As I said before, it doesn't have to be fancy, just good food and memorable atmosphere. I want to feel like I'm eating in Switzerland, not New York City!

But ......what to wear?

What to wear? In Grindelwald? Almost anything. Expect to see some still in hiking clothes, a few sort of dressed up, others in jeans and shirts or sweaters. There will certainly be some Germans at least in shorts and sandals unless it's winter. Expect to see almost anything except really dressy clothes.

Patrick's advice might be right for the day, also for rustic restaurants. Not so for the really good restaurants.

While jeans are still ok I would probably not wear them for dinner. And if you want something festive and gourmet food men better wear a nice jacket (tie not required).

Maybe I'm out of touch, but how many men wear jackets in the "fanciest" restaurants in Grindelwald particularly in the summer? I'd venture it's well under 20%. No?
We're not talking Zurich or Geneva here.

My husband's so happy. I guess he will not take a sports coat, just a dressy sweater & shirt etc.

Found this on gemut.com

Restaurant Kirchbühl
With perhaps the best view of any non-mountain top restaurant in the Jungfrau region, the Kirchübhl also offers one of the best overall dining experiences. There are actually three restaurants: the main dining room with Swiss and international cuisine, the Stube with Swiss specialties such as raclette and fondue, and an Asian restaurant. Since you can select from all three menus regardless of where you sit, try the main restaurant (or on its outside terrace) just to the left of the Swiss flag. Youll find yourself staring straight down into the maw of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier between the Eiger and the Lauteraarhorn.  Kirchbühl's decor is a blend of traditional and modern with a distinctly rural elegance: freshly cut flowers and Stoke-on-Trent chinaware beneath hewn wooden beams. Service is a blend of upscale formality and country warmth. In the main restaurant, entrees are priced in the CHF 35-45 ($25-32) range. The Stube's main dishes are CHF 12-25 ($9-18).
