Best Paris Guidebook?
What is the best "pocket" guidebook of Paris for a family?

Hi
I used Eyewitness Travel - Top 10 Paris. I'm a real fan of the Eyewitness Guides (mainly because of their presentation). This one is more succinct and pocket size. You can get them for other cities as well. Try Amazon.com Cheers |
That's the DK series, correct? I've used those for other European cities and have been pleased. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

I am also a fan of the Eyewitness Top 10 Books- I also always try to get a Knopf Mapguide - they have one for Paris. It is a book format but it has fold out maps for each neighborhood with large print so that you really can see the names of all of the streets- even under a street light!- It includes points of interest, restaurants, cafes, nightlife, and shopping for each area, too. I highly recommend it. I don't work for them although I do recommend them a lot on this site...I should get some kind of commission!

Thank you for the suggestion, risab!

Its not pocket size, but Paris for dummies was great for me!!

Personally, I like Rick Steves for a first-time trip to a city. He has excellent advice, good directions, and the most accurate information on sights' hours, costs, info, history and directions. He also has excellent walking tours. Paired with a good laminated map of the city, it's really all I need. I find other books cumbersome, or just not as accurate as Rick's.
On our last trip to Paris, I went overboard and bought Frommer's, Fodors, and the Michelin Green Guide for research, in addition to Rick Steves, but RS is the one who went with us. Jules |
I agree on the Rick Steves' Paris book. Easy to read and lot's of walks. I used, exclusively, Streetwise Paris map and I got everywhere so easily within my month's stay. It shows all the metro stops and street names.
What I did with Rick Steve's guide was tear out pages for particular sites - i.e. Louvre, Marais, etc. whenever I didn't need the whole book. No need to carry around the whole book. |
Forgot to mention that I printed out many pages from this Fodor's site. Got so many great restaurant and site suggestions. Again, took what I needed for the day and tossed.
