I've just finished printing out lots of driving instructions from Via Michelin, but a couple of them look very involved and perhaps inaccurate. What are your thoughts on Via Michelin versus Mappy or other on-line mapping/driving sources? I will be traveling in Tuscany and Umbria.

I have always used viamichelin and find them generally reliable. However, do not use it as a subsitute for a good map. I use the site to compliment my michelin 500 series maps.

I really prefer mapquest. It just seems the most user friendly and the print out directions and maps are very clear. I still carry a good detailed map though.

I use both Michelin and www.mappy.com.

I also take maps with me.

What routes are you looking at?

I'm with Ira - I love Mappy.com. I've been using it for the last two years and it's never failed me. My only criticism of Mappy, and really all internet mapping sites, is that too often they give you confusing directions like:

Take the A6 5.2 miles
Follow A6/B4 .2 miles
Merge on to A6/B4/C2 at Dinkelsnocker .1 miles
Continue on A6 to Fufusberg 312 miles...

Why don't they just say "Stay on the A6 all the way". My navigator, Wifey, gets all confused when all the .1, .3, .7 mile notes show up on the itinerary. She's expecting some major turnoff but instead all that happens is that another highway temporarily merges with the main road.
If they just said "Follow the gigantic blue sign toward Fufusberg" I'd be fine.

I would never trust an online source for the final trip. Get the Michelin map of the areas.

Thank you all for the good advice. I was planning to take the Italian Touring Club atlas of Stradale d'Italia,but it just arrived and I don't like it. I can't get a good sense of guidance from it. I think I'll head to Barnes and Noble and look at the Michelin maps there. Other than the Michelin 500 series that bobthenavigator recommends, any other favorites for Tuscany and Umbria?

The 500 series is great for planning and highway driving. For real detail, you want the TCI map of Toscana at 200K to 1. Your Atlas will include that but may not be easy to figure out.
