Best neighborhood, first time Rome
 

Hi !

We (2 adults) will be in Rome in next july and we are looking the best place to stay (Hotel or appartment) for our needs. here's some ideas to help us find the best location :

Budget: we could up to 160 euro by night

First time visitor so we want to do the same stuff first timers do !

Food lovers; We want to enjoy great meals

Not fan of nightclub

We can walk, take public transport or a cab if needed.

Trastevere seems nice but would it be the best for us ? It seems also to be a somehat large neigborhood, any indications which streets would be the best ?

What amenities do you need in a hotel or apartment?

The only manadatory thing is AC....If we go the hotel way, having included breakfast could be nice.

Look around Via Giulia. You will have walking access to Vatican, Trastevere, Piazza Navona, Pantheon.

Stay near Spanish Steps if main goal is shopping and Borghese Gallery.

Is our budget (160 euro max) is enough ?

I don't know the current rates but we stayed at Cesare several years ago and thought the location was perfect-- between the Spanish steps and the Pantheon.

The best place to do in a town like Rome is to check Bus connections and subway (not as organized as London, let's say..) Then check hotels in the area. some ppl say the north side is better than the south....don't really believe that. It;s a huge place and not so easy to divide.
Things to do are endless! it's pretty much a outside museum. Definitelly Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. for sure Tevere side, great food there too!

I think your budget for a hotel might be a bit low, but have you considered using Home Away or Airbnb? Trastevere is a fantastic neighborhood and a little bit less expensive than the other side of the river. You can still walk everywhere you want to. Sette Oche in Trastevere is excellent and will not break the bank. Also they are open from lunch until dinner is over, which is not true of many in Rome. Maison Giulia, on fabulous Via Giulia, is reasonably priced with very friendly hosts, but very noisy.

I bet for 160 euros a night you could find a very nice apartment in Trastevere or even the Centro. How many days will you have?

Like I've said Trastevere seems large, is there any street better than another ?

And we have use home away and airbnb many times without problems. Is there any law against airbnb in Rome ?

In Trastevere, I would want to be fairly close to the river, but not on the busy Viale di Trastevere or the road along the river or way out near the Trastevere train station. Somewhere between the Ponte Sisto and the Ponte Palatino. You don't want to stay too far away from that section of the river. You can catch tram #8 on Viale di Trastevere to Piazza Venezia. The Forum is next to it and the Colosseum is a short walk. In another direction from Piazza Venezia you have the Pantheon in a few blocks walk. You can also take the tram to Trastevere train station and change to tram #3 to the far side of the Colosseum and Palatine Hill entrance of the Forum.

I agree with Carole that you should be able to find an apartment for that price a bit more central than Trastevere.

There are also convents that are convenient if you just need basics (some are plush, some are not). There is a convent about a block or so from Piazza Venezia on Via della Botteghe Oscure (a block further is Largo Argentina). About two blocks one direction from the convent is the Pantheon and in the opposite direction two blocks is the Jewish Ghetto. This convent has AC, private bath, tv, mini bar, breakfast, elevator, either no curfew or very late curfew. There are some pics on their website of the rooms. Click on camere (means rooms). The price should be less than 160€ (maybe closer to 100€).

The problem I have trying to book apartments in Rome is they aren't ever available all the nights I want.

Finally, we have stayed at Arco del Lauro and I probably wouldn't go back. It was just a bit out of the way for me, and I didn't like going to a cafe for the included breakfast.
