Best method of transportation between cities in Italy
 

Hello,
My husband and I will be honeymooning in Italy this May (woohoo!!) and I wanted to ask some advice on best and most efficient methods of transportation for the following:

From Cinque Terre to Tuscany (near Sienna)
From Tuscany (near Sienna) to the Amalfi Coast (Atrani to be exact)
Amalfi Coast to Rome

A bit more info: the itinerary isn't negotiable as all the accommodations are booked. I would also like to ask when/how is the best way to stop in Naples for some pizza? I was thinking on the way to Amalfi but wondered if it would be easier (time-wise) to make it a day trip from amalfi?

I would drive for the first two legs.
From the Amalfi coast, local train to Naples and high speed train to Rome.

Pick up a car in La Spieza and drive to your base. I am assuming you will need the car anyhow to explore the area near Siena. You can take the train fro CT to La Spieza and a taxi to the car rental office.

Drive to Salerno, drop off the car, and take a bus to Atrani. Unless you're keeping the car for the coast.

<<Amalfi Coast to Rome>>
Bus to Salerno and then direct train to Rome.

I really think you need a car to get around Tuscany - assuming you are spending several days there and want to visit a number of the hill towns.

To go just from one large city to another train is the best option.

I've seen a bit of Tuscany over the years and have never used a car. Italy has a good transport network of trains and buses if you decide against a car. It depends on whether the places where you've booked accommodation are serviced by local transport. Using local transport in Tuscany does mean that you don't have the same ability to rush around seeing everything but to me that's a bonus as it forces me to slow down.
