Best Maps for Central Italy
We are visiting Italy in late September and I thought the essential maps for our trip would make good stocking stuffers.
We'll be doing some driving in the Val d'Orcia starting from Montepulciano & heading west to Abbey of Sant'Antimo, with stops in between. La Foce & Assisi are also possibilities. (We haven't decided if we will do an overnight in Umbria in closer proximity to Assisi/Spello yet) A drive to the Western edge of Unbria for stops in Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio & Lake Bolsena (from either Montepulciano or somewhere in Umbria) are on our radar as well. Before we arrive in this region we will be in Rome, we'll need a good walking/metro map here too. I have read about the Italian Touring Club Toscana Map, and the Michelin guide, Streetwise City Map came recommended for Rome. Are these the best materials for us? Something ekse? What about a map for Umbria? I'm also interested in useful apps for iPhone/iPad, I vaguely remember reading about downloadable GPS applications specific to region. Thank you! |
You want the Michelin # 563 for most of that and the TCI Toscana for details in Tuscany.

There is a touring club map that covers Italy between Rome and Florence.

We have both TCI (Italian Touring Club) and Michelin Maps. I like the Michelin map for central Italy best, but I know know if the edition I have is printed any more.

Thank you!

The metro in Rome is very limited (lines A & B). Just print their map off the transport website. It includes some of the regional trains also including the two trains from the airport (Leonardo Express and the FL1 aka FR1).

Thanks for the input Kybpurbon. I ordered the TCI Toscana, Michelin Central Italy, Streetwise Rome & Knopf MapGuide Rome. I'll print the subway/bus maps in the links you posted too!
