best Ireland map for self driving?
I have been unable to find the post about the best highway maps for driving in Ireland. I go in three weeks and if possible they may still be time for me to order one?? Thank you for your time.

Michelin Ireland. They have it on Amazon (or in bookstores). It's great--you can't miss.
|
Yup, that's the one I used. If you want one that has all the local roads as well, you'll need the ordnance map for the area you are in...
|
I only use Michelin for Europe. I used a Michelin for the whole of Ireland, along with the Michelin Red and Green guides.
I would call Michelin in Greer, SC and order them. They will get them right out to you. Have a good trip |
Here is Michelin's phone number to order

We just returned from SW Ireland and used the Michelin Map. We also took a GPS with the Ireland chip and it was very helpful. It's great to get to a round about and not have to search all of the signs.

I've got the Michelin guide for Ireland and the UK, but what are the red and green guides that gracejoan3 mentioned?
|
Hi BudgetQueen...We always (7 times)use The Complete Road Atlas of Ireland (Ordnance Survey), mainly because it shows megalithic sites, holy wells, churches, castles, etc. We purchased ours at Barnes and Noble. It's invaluable for exploring Ireland.

I use both the Michelin and the ordinance survey map. For the michelin map, I get the combimed Great Britain and Ireland atlas. I prefer the atlas format and my wife reads them better. When I get close to an area I want to investigate more closely, the OSI map is a good choice.

Just got back Saturday from 2 weeks in Ireland driving myself around. I used the Ordinance Survey map--excellent! Very easy to follow and I liked the spiral binding, it was easy to flip pages. I bought it at the Shannon airport for 12,50.
|
chemgirl-- is that 12,50 (?) US Dollars or Euros or what?
|
We have used Michelin but I also love the Ordinance Surveys for all the reasons mentioned above. If you are going to be driving in just one or even a couple specific areas you can purchase smaller fold out maps for just those areas and not the whole of Ireland. (I have quite a little collection. Yes, I'm a dork.) Major bookstores (Hughes, others) and book/paper sections of department stores will carry them or if you are in smaller towns, I have seen the ones specific to that area even in the little 5 and dime stores. Try to get a Michelin before you go, then supplement with OSs as you need while there.
Have a wonderful trip! |
Sorry-the 12.50 is euro. There's a store near the car rental desks with maps. I also saw the same one at newstand-type places throughout the country and some tourist info places, so they should be pretty easy to find.
|
Called Michelin and they are out of stock, Amazon is also. Michelin said I can get the book in Ireland? Is this info correct? Please let me know going out October 3rd for 18 days and we will be driving. Thank you for your help.

Looks like I may be a little too late in ordering a map as well as I leave in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping it'll be easy to buy one at the Dublin airport.

This past May my sister and I were in Ireland - doing quite a bit of driving. We used The Complete Road Atlas of Ireland (Ordnance Survey). It had a great amount of detail, I liked that it was spiral bound. I bought it off of Amazon.

BudgetQueen,
I used http://www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes/default.asp to plan my routes. It works just as good as a Yahoo/Google map in the states. And with a map from the rental car company, I was good to go The Irish highway/road system is not complex. You will be fine. Have fun! |
We just returned from Ireland. Make sure you have a good map because the ones that come with the rental cars are really bad. We did pick up a Michelin map what a god sent. We found that driving was not as bad as we first thought. the round abouts were the thing that made us crazy until we got used to them. Have a wonderful time.

Just back from my Ireland trip. I picked up an Ordinance Survey map at Dublin airport. When we picked up the car a few days later through Hertz, they provided us with a map as well. I found their map to be very easy to read...in fact, I think I referred to the OSI map only a couple of times...we pretty much used the Hertz map and found it great!
