Best Indian / Vegetarian restaurant in Athens

Hi

My family is celebrating my mother's birthday while we are in Athens. She is vegetarian and would love to have Indian or local cuisine if available.

Any suggestions from local fodorites? This is for dinner with drinks. Thanks a bunch!

As an insider I have some recommendations you might find helpful. I've chosen restaurants in only in downtown Athens:

If you want pure vegetarian with a multi-ethnic touch, "Avocado" is ideal for you. It serves great organic food in a laid-back atmosphere, and is one of the favourite restaurants of the Athenian vegans. Address: Nikis 30

Now if you want Indian food, "Indian Masala" is a good choice. It serves basic Indian food in very reasonable prices. It's not far from Monastiraki square so you won't find it difficult to get there. Address: Ermou 129

And finally, I strongly recommend you to try a Greek restaurant. Trust me Greek cuisine is -very- vegetarian friendly. The stereotype of our cuisine just being greasy gyros is a horrible lie. Gyros is fast-food, you will never find it in restaurants, and meat itself was a rare ingredient in the Greek diet. For true Greek food, "To Mauro Provato" is an excellent choice. It's a modern restaurant which serves amazing food based on traditional recipes and top quality ingredients. The food is just amazing, it's considered one of the best of its kind in Athens, and in very good prices. Address: Arrianou 31

Excellent suggestions from Petros, who in his enthusiasm may have done a "finger stutter" on the last address, I believe it is Adrianou.

I haven't tried the Indian restaurants in Athens, but as a vegetarian myself, thoroughly enjoyed the food and service at Avocado (vegeatarian) and Gostijo (vegetarian-friendly) two years ago.

Restaurants in Athens often don't have a long life.....
New ones are opening, old ones are closing all the time...
The initial post was from May 2015... before making any plans it is advisable to check first if recommendations from older posts are still around.

There is a great website that gives accurate information on most Athenian restaurants ( www.ask4food.gr) but it is only in greek unfortunately.

Just in case . . . the thread is two years old - was topped by an advertiser. Still might be useful info.

I always find the Indian Dinner website useful if I'm looking a curry fix anywhere.
