Best Hotels In Rome

Our son is traveling to Rome this summer to study architecture. How wonderful, eh? Right in the heart of it all! We want to meet up with him and realize August will be hotter than a firecracker! We love heat, thankfully! What are the best hotels for the buck if you are staying for 1 week in Rome? We want to be somewhat close to the Campo de' Fiori area. Thanks folks.

How many "bucks" would you like to spend per night?

You can look at the hotel listings here on Fodors, as well as on Frommers.com, timeout.com, and other on-line sources. Text search here for "rome AND hotel (and campo)" to pull up tons of threads. When you find some that make your "short list," text search by hotel name, and look for feedback on tripadvisor.com

A great site on which to browse and get an idea of what available at what cost and in what area is venere.com, which also has guest comments.

Buona fortuna!

Thanks folks. Lots to go on. My eyeballs are sore from reading reviews, looking at website photos, maps at locations, and I am exhausted. We would like a room that we would actually want to sleep in and look at. Many are traps I wouldn't want to stay in. Yes, we will be out and about, but we would like a nice continental bfst, a/c and a larger suite, say in the 100-150 per night range US dollars. Thanks

Check out the Casa di Santa Brigida on Piazza Farnese. It will be closer to 200 USD per night for two, but has large rooms, breakfast, immaculately clean, and A/C. This is a convent and the sisters are very helpful, friendly, and there is no curfew. They give you a key to the door! Wonderful place that will not disappoint.

My wife and I stayed at the Residenza Farnese.. very close to Campo dei Fiori. We liked the hotel, great location on a quiet side street next to Palazzo Farnese. They have a web site, but can't find the address.

<...we would like a nice continental bfst, a/c and a larger suite, say in the 100-150 per night range US dollars.>

You didn't say whether this is a first trip to Rome, or Europe for that matter. I may be way off base, but it seems your expectations may differ from what is available. If you expect hotels to be like those in the US you may be surprised in terms of the size of rooms, which are in general considerably smaller. I'm no authority on hotels in Rome (though we have been there many times), but I doubt a "larger suite" would be available for the dollar price you note. This is particularly true with the current bad exchange rate from US$ to €.

Breakfast has been included at almost every hotel we have stayed in in Europe. Though it varies greatly, I don't think you will have a problem finding a nice continental breakfast. Likewise with AC, which you will definitely need in August.

Good luck in your quest for what you are seeking. On our last visit to Rome we stayed at the Santa Chiara which we liked very much and has been popular with Fodorites. You will find lots of comments in "rants and raves" here.

Just a word about AC in Rome (and in most other places in Europe). If you're expecting the same frosty coldness that's common with US AC, you may be disappointed. It's been my experience that hotel AC in Europe takes the edge off the heat, but doesn't necessarily make you reach for another blanket. Sometimes the AC is restricted to certain hours of the day/night, so if it's important to you, ask about this when you make a reservation.

A hotel in your price range that we loved is the Due Torri. It's quiet, near Piazza Navona and Campo di Fiori, and has a superb breakfast buffet. We were there in October and didn't need AC, but they do have it. I don't know if it's centrally or individually controlled.

Thanks you all. Very helpful comments and websites. We decided, after much web site exploration (hours and hours) on the Santa Chiara. Looks and sounds great. I think I speak more for my wife than myself, in terms of what she has come to know and expect in US hotels. I am content to sleep in a barn myself, as I know we will actually spend more time walking and viewing the sites than sitting/
sleeping in our hotel. Yes, it is our first trip to anywhere other than Cabos San Puke-ass and the lovely Hawaiian Iles. (Guess which I loved better!!. I look forward to everyhting ahead, except the beating the US $ is taking compared to the Euro. Will report back later. Arrivederci!

I have heard that everything about Santa Chiara is nice except the staff. I have heard from many people that the staff there is not friendly.

Uuuuhm, milehigh, the thread is almost a year old. Think BCarvalho was in Rome summer of 2004.

I do wonder what the end result was regarding a hotel in Rome.

Oh, didn't notice that!
Would be interesting to hear from
BCarvalho -- about whether he/she found
the staff to be pleasant enough....

Hello milehigh, wouldn't it be nice if posters that started threads posted back regarding their experiences.

But some do not. A shame.

Take good care.

It is unfortunate we sometimes don't hear back from posters and how our suggestions/helps worked out.

Milehigh--we stayed at the Santa Chiara 2-3 years ago and found the staff to be most pleasant and helpful. They arranged for taxis, suggested restaurants, etc. Hopefully, that has not changed in the past few years.

We stayed at the Hotel Portoghesi a few years ago, and the main criticism on this forum was that the staff was not friendly.

Well...they weren't. But they were polite, gave us directions, arranged for taxi's and answered all our questions. The room was small but comfortable and the location was excellent.

We found that the hotel met our needs nicely and that not having the friendliest staff was not a problem.
