Best Hikes while in Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen?
Does anyone have any advice for the must do hikes while in this region. Any other advice or feedback is welcome!
Cheers Shane |
How many nights do you have in each area, and what time of year is your trip?
We stayed at Wengen and Murren. We saw lauterbrunnen as a daytrip from Wengen. Really enjoyed the Trummelbache falls...allow at least a couple hours for that. We also walked across the Lauterbrunnen valley, but it was a hot day and there wasn't actually much to see...we felt there would have been better ways to spend the time. But Trummelbach falls were great. |
Hello waywardfolk :)
There are so very many hikes to enjoy, and of course it all depends on your abilities. Two favorites: http://www.jungfrau.ch/en/desktopdef...311_read-2043/ http://www.jungfrau.ch/en/desktopdef...251_read-6402/ Click on the "pdf" link to see the maps and detailed descriptions. This should at least get you started. There is a lot of information on Fodor's about hiking in this region. Use the "search" function above, using words such as "Berner Oberland hiking" and you'll find plenty to help in your planning. Happy travels! |
thanks so much guys! i will be leaving in 4 days. trying to decide where I should stay as well. i am down to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. not sure which is better or if i should look into another spot. cheers!

would it be best to buy a guide book for the hikes before I leave or when I get to Switzerland?
|
In Grindelwald, inside the small train station, is the tourist information area. They are very helpful! Also, in a display case you will find good free maps, with each hike/walk described. I have found this ample info instead of carrying around a book.
Happy travels! |
thanks! i was thinking about doing the Kleine Scheidegg hike from Gindelwald to Lauterbrunnen. Seems to be getting some decent reviews.

One of my favorites in the area is First to the Bachalpsee (or beyond):

Hi waywardfolk,
We stayed in Lauterbrunnen last September for 8 days. We did a lot of easy hiking. We rode the cablecar from Wengen up to Mannlichen and then hiked around the mountain to Kleine Scheidegg. From there we rode the train back down to Lauterbrunnen. It was very easy and we brought a picnic lunch and stopped along the way on one of the benches to enjoy lunch and the views. And the cows bells. Another day we rode the train from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald and then took the cablecar up to First. From there we hiked down to Gross Scheidegg and then took the bus back down to Grindelwald. Another day we rode the aerial cable car and train up to Murren. From there we rode a funicular up the mountain to Allmendubul. We hiked down from there to Murren for a couple of hours. The BO is a beautiful area. We took the train up to the Jungfrau and then hiked around outside for a few hours. It was an especially beautiful, clear and warm day so we were very lucky. Switzerland is expensive, so be prepared. We found it helpful to pick up some picnic stuff at the grocery and then eat somewhere along the trail. No views quite like it in the world. Keep in mind that when you are hungry at lunch, the grocery will be closed. Plan ahead and buy your food earlier in the day. You will have a great time, Michele |
Anyone headed to the Berner Oberland should ask for Kim hawley's excellent info pages on Wengen & vicinity. She is on this forum. We found it had useful info on hikes & activities for the whole Berner Oberland even if you aren't staying in Wengen. If you are staying in Wengen, then her pages are even more relevant.
We stayed in both Wengen and Murren which enabled us to have access to many different experiences during our 11 nights in the Berner Oberland. waywardfolk: If I was choosing between Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, I would definitely choose Lauterbrunnen, since Lauterbrunnen is well connected to transportation up into both sides of the Alps...enabling you to get to many different spots conveniently. As for us, we were glad we had chosen to stay in both Murren and Wengen...but that worked for us because we had 5 nights in Murren and 6 nights in wengen. |
thanks a lot everyone, if anyone has any other must does while i am in the area i would appreciate it. i will also be in St. Mortiz for 7 days as well. cheers
