Best Gelato in Rome

probably beaten to death...but we'll be there between Christmas and New Years...and since we're Minnesotans, it will be balmy weather to us and we want to know where to get the BEST gelato Roma has to offer? I am going to book my hotel based on your answers!

And, of course, all gelaterias were great. There was one gelateria, however, that did stand out to us. I don't know its name, but it's located right across from the Trevi Fountain.

Part of the fun of Italy is to sample every gelato stand while you are traveling so you can compare?

Yes. That's why you always want to walk so that you can sample as many gelati as possible. We made it a routine to have gelato after lunch, in between lunch, and after dinner.

BRR,

I agree that all gelato in Rome is good.

But we did especially love Gelateria Giolitti.

It was located near our hotel, which was in the Pantheon area. Almost every night after dinner we stopped there for a second dessert.

The address is Via degli Uffici del Vicario 40, Rome, Italy 00186 · 06-699-1243

Have fun trying a different flavor every day!

Byrd

bblount,
Enjoy the gelato; you do so much walking that it becomes a non-issue.

BBR,
The best gelato according to my husband - and he is an "expert" - is in the piazza with the Pantheon, to the left of the Hotel del Senato. He single handedly kept them in business the days we were in Rome.

We eat A LOT of gelato in Rome. Our favorite is La Cremeria Monteforte (Piazza Della Rotunda, 22) literally a stones throw away from the Pantheon.

I don't eat gelato but my DH could have eaten gelato ten times a day. His favorite in Rome was also by the Pantheon but I don't recall the name of it. It was on the street running to the right when facing the Pantheon So you will have to try ever gelato shop in that area BRR, lol!

My favorite was the same place that LoveItaly is talking about.

I will say that we got our best single flavor and our worst single flavor at the same place, near the Vatican. One daughter was ordering chocolate chip every where she went and this place had THE BEST. The other orderered strawberry and it was the only time that no one could finish a gelato - it tasted like "Big Red", if you're familiar with that sickly sweet drink.

I personally concentrated on all the fruit flavors.

Giolitti and Monteforte are very good, but I'm a San Crispino lover. The creamiest and purest flavors, I think. And the staff are akin to Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. Gelato Nazis, I guess. They won't sell you two flavors that they don't think go together. The queues are very orderly... something different in Rome!
And there panna is so scrumptious. Gelateria San Crispino, not far from the Trevi fountain. Go there!

I also nominate San Crispino. I can still taste the banana, and the ginger-honey was delicious.

To be honest I didn't find much of a difference, as almost all the gelato we ate tasted great!

I did love several of the flavors, especially the cherrys with vanilla, at the Blue Ice chain. And I loved Giolitti as well.

Unfortunately I won't be able to eat gelato any more due to food allergies, but just imagining it brings about cravings and smiles!

tcreath...we're also huge Blue Ice fans...thank goodness for the many miles of walking, so that the "huge" is not body-descriptive because of the gelati stops daily (or twice daily!)...we like the particular store near the Spanish Steps on Via Sistina.

I agree with Tusanlifeedit's assessment of the staff at San Crispino..nasty at times...

I must admit that a good match for Italy's gelati is Croatia's competition..especially in Dubrovnik...at half the price.

Two of my favorites are the one by the Pantheon (sorry, can't remember the name) and Mariotti by Piazza Navona.
