Della Palme near the Pantheon in Rome was our favorite during our 2 week trip.

Just back from a 12 day stay in Rome. We had gelato at least once each day, usually twice. Around Trevi we tried the gelato at San Crispo and it was very good but we thought the gelato at the National (half way between San Crispo and Trevi) was a little better. The Blue Ice gelato was last on our Trevi list(though still good).
Now the best we found in Rome was Quinto or Quinta on a side street off Piazza Navone. It was on the side street beside the Church (St. Agnes of Agony). Looking down that street it was teh second gelato cone sign on your right (the first was a blue ice place). The Stuff was FANTASTIC. The serving wwre also VERY large. We found the place by following all the people around Navone with these huge cones of gelato. The place was packed but really worth the wait. Our only regret was that we didn't find the place until our 8th day in Rome.

I LOVED the gelato in Rome.

Favourite place was just off Piazza della Rotonda/Pantheon(towards Piazza Navona) on the right hand side. It was called 'Fragola e Limone'

It was mid-October, so not very busy, which meant we could sit near the fountain in Piazza della Rotonda and people watch whilst licking up my gelato.

Rome is pure enchantment!

Well, I am back from Italy now, and the best Gelato that I had was from Coronas in Florence. Coronas is located on the Via del Calzaiuoli that runs from the Piazza Signoria to the Duomo. I thought that Vivoli's gelato was overrated.

In Rome, the gelato best buy, in my opinion, was just off the Piazza Nuvona. As you face the large church in the center of the Piazza Nuvona take the small street on the right of the church and go just beyond the first cross street. I do not remember the name of the place, but it is located on the right, just beyond that first cross street. You will not believe the amount of gelato that you get for 2 euros, and the quality is not bad either.

By-the-way, just across the street from that Rome gelato recommendation is a restaurant that was my favorite in Rome, Ecce Bombo. The restaurant opened at 7pm when I was there, which is nice for those of us who like to eat early. Thank you to the person who recommended Ecce Bombo on this website.

The Piazza Navona is also the best evening spot in Rome. The Piazza della Rotundo (also interesting in the evening)in front of the Pantheon,is less than 5 minutes away. Both places have lots of interesting eating places on the Piazza and just off on the side streets. Antonio's, less than 100 feet off the Piazza della Rotunda, is supposed to be good, but it was not open when I was there.

Giolitti near the Pantheon is the absolute best Gelato. I went there 3 times when I was there for nine nights. Try the Nocciola (Hazelnuts) flavor. I also tried Blue Ice near Piazza Navona and it was ok.

Perche Nod - Florence
Vivoli - Florence
Gelateria Snoopy - Cortona

Tiramisu (real chunks of ladyfingers) and Pesce best flavors.

I am sorry to say this, but you can not get the best ice cream in Italy. Only 20% cream. In northern Europe they use 40% cream. The Italian watered ice may taste literally cooler, but better, no.

Gelato is good wherever you buy it in Italy, whether it be Florence, Rome Capri or Pescara. In USA the best is in Dallas at Paciugo. Ciao

It is because gelato is made with milk and not cream that is is so good. The favors of the fruit (or whatever) are not hidden under the heaviness of the fat (cream) I to liked Giolitti for both the gelato and the atmosphere. They make each cone into a show

the place at the Trevi Fountain.........Bacci (like the candy) gelato is my fav.

Big Pig: My kids saw your posting and were so excited: "Someone knows Perche No! Perche No."

We still refer to it as "The Miracle of Perche No." We were told it was the best of the best (of course, Florence. You Rome fans just don't know your gelato!). The experts told us "Vivoli has the reputation, but not the true taste." We were up to four gelatos a day at various stops (we're the gelato, museum, gelato, museum people--an arrangement that only Florence could accomodate for five days)but we had yet to find Perche No. We went up and down that street ten times, I swear, that week. Never saw Perche No, no matter how hard we tried.

It was our last night. We wandered home along the street in the dark, and all of a sudden, a neon light sputtered on. It was...Perche No. We went in and ordered our individual favorite combination of flavors (we had decided what our favorite combinations per person by trial and error throughout the week).

We walked out toward our hotel, knowing we had a lot of packing to do. We made it back to the hotel, looked at each other, and said, "Let's go back!"

We ran back, ordered more, the owner was stunned. "How can you eat more?," he asked. "Yours is the best...and we have tasted all the gelato in Florence," we exclaimed. "Is that all you have done, eat gelato?" Pause, pause, pause. "Yep, pretty much."

Ah, BigPig, we will consult you in the future for your other choices on other cities!
Ok I have to tell my Perche No story. When I was 19 (35 years ago!) I went to Europe for the first time with a couple of college friends. Perche No was our favorite gelato shop in Florence. I think we went there at least once a day, sometimes twice.

Fast forward to 3 years ago, first trip to Florence in many years. Can't remember the name of the gelateria we used to love so much, but what does it matter? Surely it's not still around. Turned the corner and THERE IT WAS!!

But my very favorite gelato is a toss-up between the shop in the Piazza della Cisterna (?) in San Gimignano (not the one on the corner, the OTHER one) and the one across from the left side of the cathedral (facing it) in Orvieto.

aaaahhhh....memories.... Like all good tourists, we ate Gelato all around Italia.... but a particular memory comes to mind. I think it was Vivoli's in Florence... I had been looking out for it, turned a corner... and there it was.... My hubby and I shared them, as he was looking after my figure!! But I seem to remember this particular one..was it zabliglione, tiramisu and baci??? Incredibly awesome flavour...hmmm... time to go back....
