Best ethnic/regional restaurants in Paris?
 

We will be in Paris for 7 days in August.
We will be hoping to eat the following types of cuisines:
North African
Vietnamese
Basque
Alsatian ( I hear Chez Jenny is past her prime)
Any other regional cusines we shouldn't miss?

Please! Someone respond! I leave in days; you don't want me eating bad regional food!

I've eaten here, and although it is French it is a special kind of French (if you consider "dead" to be special).

Simply "Unique"! Thanks to its Gallic atmosphere and its unchanged formula since the opening in 1969, "Nos Ancêtres les Gaulois" is still a major place to have fun in Paris. Unique because there is no branch of it in the world. They are situated in the heart of Paris, on the Saint Louis Island, and easy to get to from both banks of the Seine. On Saturday evening a Celtic bard comes to please your ear. Atmosphere could be very wild, not the place for a romantic rendezvous. To start, unlimited serving from our "Buffet". Then, a choice of grilled meats from our two open fireplaces. And of course, unlimited serving of Corbières wine from the barrel. All inclusive set price is FRF 205 (USD 30) Self-service buffet: salted meats, mixed salads, cold meats Choice of grill: beef kebab, lamb kebab, Slice of leg of lamb, Lamb chops, and Rib steak Vegetables: rice in a sauce, ratatouille, French beans, and cheese platter Choice of desserts: fresh fruit basket, home made pie, upside down apple pie, fruit salad, ice cream, chocolate mousse, caramel cream. As much Corbières wine from the barrel as you can drink.

Soleil de Minuit
15 rue Desnouettes / 15 eme


This is the only one finish restaurant in the whole France. Opened in 2000, it faced a great success. "Soleil de Minuit" means midnight sun in French. It is located in the left bank of Seine River, close to Ballard subway station. Of course the meals come from the far north and are particularly exotic. Imagine a steak of moose, or a caribou capriccio. You could enjoy also tasty herring and delicious salmon. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

...another thought..have you checked the restaurants listed in this web site? if you read under the french restaurants, you will find that some have regional fare..another restaurant..i would not like to recommend it as the best..(i find it a little expensive for what is served though not expensive) but the location makes up for a good deal..ma bourgogne..on place des vosges...

Nos Ancestres if "fun" if you have a large group. You are seated at long tables and it is "all you can eat and drink" but the food is not particularly exceptional. People seem to go there to celebrate birthdays--lots of camaraderie.

Have you eaten at all of these and find them to be good?

Leonora, perhaps you weren't aware but you started two identical threads with this title within a short time of each other, and the other one had 10 responses to it. Why don't you click on your name to find all your posts.

We have eaten at several of Robert's list and would say we were less than blown away by Affriole.

You want ethnic, right? My personal choices:

Paris Main d'Or, 133 rue du Fauberg St.-Antoine, 11th Evenings only: Corsican food. I loved the baby goat. My wife loved the baked cheese appetizer. Everything was great. Corsican wine is quite good, too.

L'Atlas, 12 bd St-Germain, 5th Wonderful North African couscous and tajines with abundant portions. Excellent food and very nice decor.

Go to a brasserie. They all serve choucroute garnie, which is Alsatian.

Yes, we have eaten at all of the restaurants on the list, some more than once. Some are better than others. All are smaller, family run and we've found all of them comfortable and welcoming. Fish, of course, is the strangest, belonging to an American who also owns La Deniére Goutte (the last drop), a great wine store in the 6th with an impressive list of clientele.

I would also add to the list one that we haven't yet tried, but one that's gotten some fair reviews, L'Auberge Etcherorry, a Pays Basque restaurant in the 13th.
