Best day trip (or less) from Rome?

Thanks for any suggestions. I would love to fit in a day trip while in Rome, we are starting out in Venice for 3 days and then off to Rome for 6 days. No time really in Venice but hoping to squeeze in from Rome.

type in "day trip from rome" (without quotes)in the search field above. Lots of previous discussion about that.

Try going to Ostia Antica. Fascinating excavation of the ancient port town that served Rome.

Like Barbara, I would suggest Ostia Attica. Another great day out would be Hadrian's Villa.

I enjoyed Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. They're fairly close to each other, so you can do both on the same day.

Visit Castel Gondolfo where the Pope has his summer residence. We had a lovely lunch by the lake.

My favorite is Tivoli for Villa d'Este's fabulous water gardens full of splish-splashing fountains and Hadrian's Villa - as good as any archaeological site near Rome.

Take train or bus about 45 mins to Tivoli town, where Villa d'Este is at and then bus from villa to Hadrian's Villa a few miles in the country towards Rome then bus from Villa back to Rome - to a bus station by a metro stop.

You can do Florence as a day trip from Rome. It's a full day, but can be done. 1.5 hr ES train.

My vote is for Orvieto, which is an hour by train from Roma, but it all depends on what you like. If antiquity is important, then Ostia Antica is your best bet. If you would like to get the flavor of an historic Italian hilltown, Orvieto will provide you with a bit of that experience, plus a magnificent cathedral and a world famous wine with your lunch.

Try to find some photos of Orvieto and you will see what I mean.

Hi dorie,

>I need a lunch spot in Orvieto,

The fixed price lunch in the garden at
I Sette Consoli
Pzza Sant’Angelo 1A
phone/fax 011 39 0763 343911

is worth the trip. About 45E pp + wine.

Hi TB,

>.thinking of either Orvieto or Amalfi coast now...

I strongly suggest saving the AC for another visit when you can see it properly.

If you are going in the high season, it will be a long, hot, crowded and tiring day.

Orvieto is a much better idea.

Hi travelbug,

I would vote for either Tivoli or Orvieto. I did Hadrian's Villa and the Ville d'Este as a day trip from Rome and it was absolutely delightful and easy.

Stayed in Orvieto for 3 nts on another trip and can recommend it highly. If you go for a day trip - make it a full day as there is much to see and do! Start early and leave late. It's just an hour by train.

Buon viaggio!
