Best Day Trip From Prague Train or Tour?

We would like to take one or two day trips while in Prague next month. What would be your top don't miss suggestion and should we take an organized tour or go by train? We love castles and exploring towns. Has anyone taken an organized tour and if so who do you suggest we book it with? Thanks for your help! Wendie

over my many trip to Prague I have organised tripsd my selk and have also taken trips organised by companies. There are lots of them but
Pragueexperience and Martin Tours I have found to be very good.
Whitman Tours are particularly good for covering the Jewish History of Prague.
I have done trips to Kutna Hora (see other thread on this page)Benesov ( for the brewery and Konopiste castle),Plzen ( for the brewery several times),Popovovice Kozel (again for the brewery), and Karlstiejn all easily organised by myself or travelling partner.
This May we will take a self organised trip to Tabor and hopefully some other place yet to be decided ( probably beer related).

Pilsner Urquell In Plsen, been there 5 times now,the tour has evoloved over the years and it a bit plastic compared to the early ones, but sampling the wonderful beer from the great barrels in the cellars of the brewery is just wonderful.
If you fancy treating your hubby to a trip there just let me know and i can give you all the details about tours and how to get there, again very easy from Prague.Tour comapnies can charge upwards 0f 1500kc for a organised tour but i have got return train fares, tour of the brewery ,lunch and a couple of beers in the Brewery resturant (very nice btw) plus a beer in another 15th century pub for a price in the region of 500kc per person. If you go to my profile on trip advisor you can see lots of pics of the brewery tour there.
Took my nephew and his pal there last year (both 21 years old then) and they loved it .

I would rate Kutna Hora as a top choice, if Cesky Krumlov is too far for you (although I did it as a day trip and enjoyed it a lot). I also went to Hluboka and Ceske Budejovice, really liked both.

I only took bus tours as they seemed the most convenient and best value for the money for where I wanted to go. They have several good bus day tour companies in Prague and their prices are extremely reasonable. So it is a lot more convenient in several ways (for one thing, you couldn't even take the train to some places I went, or if you could, you wouldn't be able to stop to see some of the things we saw in the country around the place, or the train station isn't actually in the town center, such as in Cesky Krumlov).

I think taking the train to CK takes too long for a day trip, as you have to transfer and then it doesn't stop in town, so you have to take a bus from it to the town. That just takes up a lot of time by train as the trip is 2-3 hours to begin with just for driving. So for the bus tour, we left Prague around 9 and probably got there around 11-12 (but we stopped to see some unusual church on the outskirts). We had free time for several hours on our own, then a special tour of the castle with a reserved guide for our group, we got to see some things the regular public does not, I think, then another hour or so on our own and the bus left around 4-5 pm and we got back in Prague early evening.

I've used Martin Tours and Prague Sightseeing tours, both were good, but I would give the latter a nod for where I'd look first to see if they had what I want. They had more comfortable buses, although both had good prices and excellent guides. I especially enjoyed the tour through PS which included Hluboka castle and Holasovice and Ceske Budejovice. this is it YOu couldn't get to Hluboka or Holasovice by train.

BTW, these bus tours were fairly small. In fact, the Martin Tours one only used a van, not a regular bus (which seated about 8, I guess), which is one reason it wasn't as comfortable. The seats weren't padded and I kind of like those busses for sitting and viewing the countryside on a long trip, it is very pleasant for me. The PS tours had maybe a dozen folks on them. I think the one to Kutna Hora had more, maybe up to 20, I forget.
