Best Day Trip
 

We're leaving on Oct. 20 for six nights. What's the best day trip by train--York? My husband can't really walk, so we'd like to see some neat place or places that we'd either appreciate from the train, or can get off the train and have public transportation right there. For one or two day trips, what would be the least expensive way? Thanks!

Yours is one of the few situations where I would recommend a coach tour instead of doing this on your own.

York is a fabulous place - but the train station is just outside the medieval city walls and to get around in the city from there you'd really need to walk or a local bus and walking, or a cab and walking.

Same for Oxford or Bath or Cambridge or Canterbury.

In your case - I'd book a fully escorted coach tour that will pick you up at your London hotel - take you somewhere for the day, and deliver you right back at the hotel that night. MUCH easier than trying to navigate the trains/buses/city centres on your own.

But they won't be cheap. Check out Golden Tours, Evans Evans, and other tour companies

But be aware that *many* of the coach tours that do hotel pickups don't return you to the hotel! They have buses start at the hotels and collect people for many different tours, then go to Victoria coach station where people are divided according to what tour they are doing (which works because they all start at the same time). At the end of the day, however, they may just dump you at Victoria and leave you to find your own way back! The one time I did an Evan Evans tour, several folks on the bus were extremely disconcerted by this.

I would definitely go to York. There would be transportation immediately at the station and the old town is very interesting. I think you would love it there.
