Best Döner Kebap in Germany?

Funny that you mention that...
Not to gross out all you kebap/swarma aficionados, but in some countries kepaps can be pretty scary. We lived in Saudi for three years - the spits were often outdoors and there was something incredibly unappetizing about a guy sweating profusely as he cut off slabs of meat for YOUR swarma.
I used to watch in morbid fascination as the droplets of sweat... well, you get the picture.
The sign of a good swarma stand in Saudi was if the shop keeper covered the outdoor spit when he shut down for prayer.
Needless to say, I didn't eat swarmas very often in Saudi, but I've had no problems with the standards in Western countries or here in Kuwait.

The best doner kebabs I had were at the Naschmarkt in Vienna, secondarily in Munich, Wurzburg, and the Koln train station. I could live on those things (if I had to) and almost did during the backpacker years.

Across from the BachenheimWarte in Frankfurt - they also had these incredible beans in tomato sauce that I've been trying to replicate for 2 years. While I'm close, it's not quite the same. I miss Doner Kabap so much! I also miss the street vendors with the giant grills for sausage.
I think German health codes (especially meat quality) is much higher than in the US. So I wouldn't worry about eating out anywhere there. And it was so much more healthy than fast food with all the fresh veggies.

YUM! My Fav. Dönner Stand:
Where: Stuttgart, Germany
Local: on Königstrasse (next to a Pizza Hut).
Anyone have a recipe for the döner? And where can I find the pepricka like spice used?

Hey Diablo...
There IS a Döner Store in NYC. I found it on 5th Ave, but I am not completely sure where.
As for Woyzeck...Berlin is most famous for its Döner since there is no other place in Germany where more Turkish people live. There is one Döner store around every corner.

UMMMM Döner Kebap! The best we ever had was in Granada in Spain. They were so good we ate there 3x during a 2 night stay! We were almost embarrased when we went in the 3rd time and the young man already knew what we wanted. They were sooooo good!

Dawson - I've been to that stand!
I have to admit, though - the only time I ever eat a doner is late at night, on the way home from the pubs. During the day, they don't seem quite so appetizing.
I will also admit that's it has been 2 years since I have had one. The last one was late at night, on a brutally hot day in Heidelberg - the night before I was flying home. It was NOT a good idea. It was the second worst flight of my life. Thank god I had an aisle seat.

Best ones I ever had in Germany were from a stand outside Tenglemanns supermarket in Gaetringen, south of Boeblingen. We lived in Nufringen and my sons would ride their bikes to the stand and get them for lunch when school was out. Almost 20 years later they still talk about them!

Made a side-trip to Schweinfurt to see some friends last December. About the only thing to recommend about this city (unless you are a ball-bearing person) is a little doner cafe in the heart of the city. Can't remember the name, but will forever remember the meal. Also recommended are the pine-wood roasted Bratwurst up the road in Coburg. Very unique.

To give credit where credit is due:
I returned the other day to the Döner place in Potsdam that I remember so well. Once again, it exceeded my expectations. You can have a chicken or regular Döner kepab. I had the chicken with cheese (Feta-like) and it was outstanding. The chicken was quite fresh and was heated with roasted peppers (and maybe sun dried tomatoes?).
Just so we can be more precise, the name of the stand is POTSDAM GRILL, and if you are in the area, I can recommend it. 2,20 EUROS for a regular. 2,80 with cheese I believe...

It is just off of the Pedestrian Zone (Brandenburger Strasse). If you walk down the pedestrian zone in the direction away from the Brandenburg Tor and the Schloss Sansouci and towards the Peter Pauls Kirche, it is just off the Pedestrian Zone to the left. I believe the street is called Jäger Strasse, although it might be the one before that. Take a left down that street and you go past perhaps 3 or 4 store fronts. You'll see the sign for Potsdam grill. Personally, I recommend the chicken.
I do hope you enjoy it!

Bird,
I live near Schweinfurt and I think I know the Doener place you're talking about. Is it the one down the narrow pathway through shopping part of downtown? (It's on a corner near a phone shop and a bakery across the way). If so, that place is great! There's another one that is really good too, but it's not really downtown (it's off of Niederwernnerstrasse).
My favorite place for a cheap meal has to be the schnitzel place out in the woods near Dittelbrunn. You get the largest schnitzel you've ever seen (like 3-4 normal schnitzels put together), pommes, and a salad. With a half liter of beer, it costs only around 8 Euro! It's a good deal and they give you foil wrap to take your leftovers home (it's almost impossible to eat the whole thing even if you're really hungry).

michmoore,
That's the one - do you remember the name? I'll be headed back to Coburg later this year and might make another stop. The place with the schnitzel sounds good - think it's worth a stop?

Bird,
No I don't remember the name but next time I'm downtown (maybe this weekend), I'll try and remember to look. I think the schnitzel place is definitely worth a visit. Especially now that the weather is going to get warmer soon (hopefully). They have a wonderful outside biergarten.
Eurotravel,
Not too much has changed here in the last 5 years I lived here. The traffic is a little bad at times, that's about it. Also, if you were from Oberwerrn, you might remember a little Imbiss called Da Nino that had the best gyros I've ever had. Anyway, he closed down his imbiss and now owns a nice little Italian restaurant in Kuetzburg.
