Best book to buy for European backpacking?

Please give me name(s) of books which provide the most helpful information on backpacking in Europe.

What type of things interest you? Are you trying to stick within a minimal budget or do you have more discretionary funds? I find that the tour books definitely target different age groups/interest levels/financial levels too.

Tell us a little more.

One trick I learned was to remove the pages from the book that I needed to lighten my load. I would staple them in the order of our destinations. We often swapped "chapters" of tour books on the train with other travellers.

Hi KNP, besides books go to www.lonelyplanet.com I think you will get a lot of good info there for your Europen backpacking trip. And have fun!

I used Let's Go Western Europe (only to find myself spending a huge chunk of my time in Eastern Europe, go figure). Lonely Planet is geared toward the budget traveler (not just the young backpacker), and I prefer it in many ways since it's written by more than just harvard grads.

Still, Let's Go isn't bad, especially for up to date info and the maps. I don't believe Lonely Planet's is updated every year, so get it only if it's a current revision.

www.eurotrip.com for good backpacking info as well.

Check out also Rick Steves books. "Europe Through the Back Door" is more about planning. He has other books about Europe and specific countries that are more about exact hotels, dining, sightseeing. His travel suggestions are good for those of any age who likes a good value. www.ricksteves.com. Also for more "hip" suggestions see the Time Out series of guides. Their website has good information about current events, music, etc. throughout the big cities of Europe. www.timeout.com.
