Best bets for York, etc.

I have promised myself a trip to the Yorkshire Dales. (Big fan of James Heriot and all that.) I have looked and looked to find the best mode of transport and potential accommodations, but what do you recommend? Any must stays, must sees? Does one stay in York and sidetrip? Scarborough looks nice? What a dilemma! :-)

I highly recomend that York is a two day (three night) destination from which you launch yourself by car to explore the countryside. For example Castle Howard and Rievaulx Abbey can be done in one day on your way to Whitby for the evening. Dilema yes. There is no way you can see all the area has to offer given the length of an average vacation. Enjoy.

I just went to London, Cambridge, York last month. We rented a car in London, but in retrospect, should have taken the train. The drive is not very special on either the A1 or M1 and a car is of little use in York or Cambridge. Stay close in to the walled city of York for a couple days. Then, rent the car to see the outlying areas.

Don't know if you are a railway buff or not but I seem to recall spending a wonderful day at the British Rail Museum in York.

York is a beautiful city-be sure a take a guided tour of the walled area-very interesting.

We often go to that part of the world and stay near Whitby. It's a very interesting little town and a good centre handy for York and also for picturesque little villages like Robin Hood's Bay.
