Best Berlin neighborhood for lodging?
We're planning to spend five nights in Berlin (two couples traveling together) so we're considering an apartment instead of a hotel. Which neighborhood of the city would be best? We'll be trying to see the "usual" Berlin highlights and plan a day trip to Potsdam. We'll be taking the train from Berlin to Dresden at the end of our time in Berlin.

We stayed here last year and really liked it
http://www.adina.eu/adina-apartment-...her-markt/home It is an apartment hotel and the location was excellent. |
I have been researching this, too, as we are spending 6 nights in late March. From my findings, it seems that it totally depends on your interests. I'm focusing on an apartment close to the museum islands, which also is not from from an underground station. It's been 15 years since we were last in Berlin, and so much has changed since then, so any advice would be welcome, too.

Our interests are more history than art. Our list includes Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie/Berlin Wall, Memorial to the Murdered Jews, Berliner Dom, Spree River cruise, Reichstag, Neus Museum, side trip to Potsdam (although we're seeing so many castles in Bavaria and on the Mosel that we may change our minds about this.)

Thank you, Pat....that is a very, very promising lead!!!

Berlin is a huge city with excellent public transit.
Good spot would be close to the Freidrichstrasse UBahn, Sbahn station. |

Yes anywhere in the Mitte or the historical center of Berlin would be handy for all the sites you want (except Potsdam) - all the sights would be within walking distance of any place like danon says around Freidrichstrasse S-Bahn/U-Bahn station - the Unter den Linden area - the main commercial drag in old Berlin. The famous Book Burning in a plaza on this avenue has a monument with a glass cover that lets you see down to some burnt books if I recall correctly. |
Thanks, PalenQ. That's what I thought. I'm looking at one apartment right by the museum islands, and one right by Checkpoint Charlie. I don't think I could go wrong with either of them.
