Best beaches in Europe

We are looking for a short beach break for the May bank holiday here in London. I've thought about Greece, but know the beaches tend to be craggy. We'd really like a place where we can just chill and relax on the sand. Already been to Sardinia, looking for any other recommendations based on short trips from London and early May time period.

Thanks for any advice!

well, here in Portugal you have some good beaches but the weather can be changeable. My birthday is at first of May, and I have pictures taken on several years. In some, we're all with t shirts, in other we´re with rain jackets, so it´s hard to forecast. Even thow if you need more tips on portugal check ( if you like ) my web page in www.geocities.com\mucuruco ;

Some more suggestions:

Cadiz or Eastern Almeria provinces, Ibiza/Formentera, Menorca or Mallorca in Spain, Corsica in France, Algarve in Portugal.

Great beaches in Italy, you will find peace and relax in any of these places in May:

-Eolian Islands (Sicily)like Panarea, Salina, Lipari, Stromboli or Filicudi, beautifull white washed houses similar to Greece

Island of San Pietro (south west of Sardinia): great fishing village atmosphere + delicious seafood, lots of beaches

- Island of Ponza, near Rome, very nice fishing villages, preserved nature, very nice transparent water.

-Gargano peninsula : Vieste, nice village, beautifull and wild nature, great beaches

-Maratea : same as for Vieste

and of course Amalfi coast and Cinque terre: Beautifull but more for lovers and romantics, beaches are difficult to reach in both places + you rarely find sands, it is more likely to be little stones'beaches or rocks. They are not so much beaches places, it is more about the beauty of villages, the great views and the atmosphere.

Read my response under the topic about May weather in the south of France. Bormes is in the Toulon area and we were on the public beach. I understand that there are many beautiful beaches in the area (without a marina) but we were limited by hotel transportation and needed to be near a phone so that's why we went to the public beach.

It seems The British go to Spain quite a bit, but I don't think you can beat it. We love Marbella. The beaches are beautiful with the lovely mountains in the background. When I lived in Scotland you could get a really cheap fare from Gatwick to various parts of southern Spain. I'v been several places in s. spain, but like Marbella the best.

Maybe it's a bit far, but I've been to Lanzarote last summer, and they have some very pretty beaches there. My favourite was a beach in the north near Orzola, but the Papagayo beaches in the south are also very pretty.
As for another Canarian island, Fuerteventura should have some beautiful beaches in the south (Jandia). I hope you'll find a nice place whatsoever.
