Best beach in Dubrovnik?
We only have a limited number of days in Dubrovnik and we will only be able to have one day dedicated to swimming and laying on the beach. We will be there about mid September. Being from the West Coast of Canada I've never spent any time at a beach with that crystal clear water and would love to be able to do that! I've read about several beaches but that hasn't really helped too much. Any suggestions or tips would be so helpful! Thanks!

I'm not a beach person, but 30 seconds on Google brought this up:

The only place I saw that really interested me were the rocks below the Buza Bar. We sat there drinking while people down below us at the base of the cliff dove from the rocks into the clear water and sunned themselves on the flat rocks. You can also take a 70 foot jump from one of the overhanging rocks if you are brave enough. I'll just sit and watch.

The suburb/resort area of Lapad has beaches where you can sunbathe and swim. It's an easy bus ride from Dubrovnik's old town, maybe 15-20 minutes one way, and bus service is frequent. I don't recall the beaches being amazing; Croatia isn't especially known for its sandy beaches.
On one visit to Dubrovnik, I stayed just outside the Pile Gate, right above a cove near the bottom of the old town walls. My B&B owner walked down for a swim one evening and I went down with him. (Not much of a beach there, but an easy place to go for a swim.) The water was still quite warm in early October, so I'm guessing it will be nice in September.
On another brief visit, I had a car and stayed in Lapad itself but didn't visit the beaches; it's cheaper/easier to park in Lapad than in/near the old town if you have a car. Lapad is a pleasant if boring resorty area, not a bad place to stay, just not special like the old town, where I'd prefer to stay.

We swam at the "beach" on the island of Lokrum last September. Of course it wasn't a sandy beach, just rocks. You could either climb down a ladder into the water or jump in, but be forewarned the rocks were slippery. I would definitely recommend water shoes. The water was beautiful but a little too cold for my taste.

Smart move, nukesafe, I wouldn't jump either. My friend's daughter fractured her spine jumping from the cliff near Dubrovnik. And she was the third one that week apparently. Not brave but young and foolish.

For sandy beaches, go to Lopud.
