Best backpacks for European travel

Working on my Christmas wish list. Traveling to Germany next summer and would like recommendations for a great, versatile but lightweight backpack. Thanks!

Any sturdy, lightweight, medium-sized (12" by 18") backpack works just fine. I recently purchased one from Eddie Bauer. Some luggage places also have good selections.

Cheers,

I think the trick to backpacks is about the "fit". Matching the right size and shape to your body, especially important if you are buying a large size. Also how the straps balance out the weight. I'd visit an outdoor &/or luggage store and see what suits you best.

Go to a luggage/sporting goods store with knowledgeable staff and try some on for size. Almost like shoes, you won't be happy with one that isn't a good fit.

Definitely try a bunch on and you'll see how some fit and some don't. I'd recommend bringing something kind of heavy to the store to put in the bag because you can tell "trouble spots" on the fit almost instantly. And don't feel stupid about walking in the store with it "loaded," anybody who has traveled or hiked with a backpack semi-seriously will know exactly what you're doing and so will a good salesperson!
Also, check on the return or exchange policy, I bought a bag that after having it at home for a while and wearing it realized it wasn't going to work. Actually I did the exchanges twice before I backpacked around Europe for 5 months.
