Best auto route from Venice to Western Slovenia
If anybody has driven between Venice and Kobarid, Slovenia, I'd appreciate knowing which is the better route (most direct, best highway): via Gorizia then north to Kobarid, or via Udine and northeast to Kobarid?
The Udine route seems better on paper, but on my not very good map, it appears that I would have to drive from one side of the 100,000 population city of Udine (no by-pass) to the other. If that's the case, the Gorizia road, though a bit farther, might be the better way.
Anybody know? Thanks.

I too am going in a few weeks, Michele. Since this involves a rental car, we are taking an early train to Trieste, picking up a car there at the train station and driving north to Kobarid via outskirts of Gorizia. We will drop off the car in Venice (no extra charge).
As for our return trip to Venice, we are still waffling. Leaning toward the Udine route, to see new territory.

Hi Logan69,
I just got back from our weekend in Slovenia. We went from Venice via Gorizia to Tolmin and then east towards lake Bohinj.
I can tell you that the ride from Gorizia to Tolmin was very smooth and nice. When driving to Gorizia you have to take the first highway exit after you cross the Slovenian border and then there's a road pointing straight to Tolmin/Bovec (Kobarid is between the 2).
Hope this helps...

Thanks, Michele. Good info to have.
That's Hemingway country, you know. I plan to be in Kobarid (formerly Caporetto, Italy, in WW1) on the 90th anniversary of the battle of Caporetto, which is the centerpiece of "A Farewell to Arms." The 19-yr old Hemingway was wounded closer to Venice, at Fossalta di Piave, which I also plan a pilgrimage to see.
