Best arrondissement in Paris for solo woman to rent for a week?
Well, that title says it all. I'm considering travelling solo to Paris next year for a week, and I'm having a difficult time figuring out where the best area to let an apartment might be. My priority is to really get a flavor for the city, but I'd like to see the sites, and I like to walk everywhere. Any areas to particularly avoid? Not interested in nightlife, just in life.

I stayed with my son at the Hotel Verneuil in the 7th district. We could walk to the museums,( Louvre and the Orsday, take the batobus, restuarants and I felt very safe here. Just my 2cents have a wonderful time and I hope others will give you more information.

Well, if you want to be in the thick of things, and want to walk places, I'd say, for a solo traveler, the best place for you would be the Marais-in and around the atmospheric Rue des Rosiers, the very fashionable, heart of the old Jewish quarter, and also, around the Rue des Francs Bourgeois, one of the more interesting streets in this area. There is also the Village St. Paul, with all its wonderful antique shops and art galleries-an area I love to walk through and browse the shops. The Marais is a wonderful vibrant area to explore, yet, you are just a few metro stops (or you can walk) into the 5th and 6th arr. to go to the famous Cafes on the Blvd. St. Germain: des Deux Magots, de Flor, also Brasserie Lipp, etc., and from the Marais, you're near by the Ile de la Cite, with Notre Dame-the Marais has been for some time, and still is, a very happening area. So if I were you, I'd center my apartment search there.

I am going solo to Paris in about three weeks (on my way to India), and I have chosen to stay around Montparnasse. It is full of nice cafes, shops, easy transportation and not a lot of tourists. This is the second time I will stay in that area (aroun Rue d`Alesia).

I recommend the 6th - especially for your first trip. I prefer it to the Marais and the 7th but all are nice. Its very lively, safe, and you can walk or get metro's easily.
Paris is a safe city by and large - I am sure there are areas that one would avoid but it seems like the areas frequented by travelers are not those areas.
