Best areas to stay in Venice

I am arranging for an apartment rental in Venice for several days in late March. So far one of the best options (balancing cost with size and appearance) is in the Cannaregio area, on Canal della Sensa. Is this a reasonably good area to be in? Its website notes 15 min. or so walk to San Marco, or 5 min. by water taxi. Thanks!

try for Dorsoduro area - has flav, but away from the madding crowds of San Marco - and not too far away.

Can't say anything bad about the Cannaregio area. BTW, Cannaregio is more of a neighborhood area, i.e. less tourists. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the apartment/hotel is clean with all the amenities that we'll need and as less touristy as possible without compromising personal safety and convenience to areas of our interests (San Marco is an area of interest to us), then it is a good hotel/apartment.
Enjoy.

This is a long but interesting thread for you to read about Dorsoduro vs Canareggio and I believe may mention the apt you're considering.

NatalieM, I lived fairly close to that area for a while. It's a lovely, residential neighborhood with few tourists and more locals. The canals there are a bit wider and straighter than the rest of Venice, and there are quite a few canalside bars and restaurants in the area. I think you would be happy there. It is a 15 minute walk to San Marco, if you walk fast, but you probably won't want to.

It's pretty hard to name a "best area" of Venice - all of the neighborhoods have their charms. If the price and look is right, go for this apartment.
