Best area to stay in Rome

Hi all

This forum has been so helpful planning my "Italian Holiday"........We have our length of stay set for next May, and are now looking for a place to stay for 4 nights. Would prefer a B&B or a quaint hotel....no big chains......we just don't know what area to stay in. It would be nice to have a balcony or rooftop access also. Thanks! :)

The trouble is best is a relative term and means different thing to different people.

In five trips to Rome, we prefer the Termini area simply for the convenience to public transit, train station, some nice restaurants , and little lower price. Being on the edge of the tourists sites, it is not centrally located but still walkable to most sites. Others think the area may be a little seedy or too commercial but for us it is best for what we value the most.

Thanks for the info. I guess I should clarify. We don't want super expensive......and we want to feel safe wandering around after dark....I realize this is another subjective term. We would like to be able to walk to most if not all the "major" attractions.

I realize that everyone will have a different preference.....just let me know why you prefer certain areas over others for you travelers that have been to Rome....

thanks again

Alot of first timers stay in the Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona, Pantheon triangle as its very central, 'safe' (although I dont think you need to be overly concerned about this), and has a lot of restaurants and activity. We also like Trastevere, its a bit farther out but we like to be away from the uber touristy areas.

Ditto jamikins on safety - we walked all over the historic center and never felt afraid. (Of course you should always be aware - not paranoid - of the potential for pickpocketing, but that's a very different issue than physical safety.)

I really liked staying in the Piazza Navona area. It's very central (we walked everywhere) and feels very "Roman" with tiny piazzas and alleys. Trastevere is not quite as in the middle of things, being across the river, but is still in walking distance and, as jamikins mentioned, is away from the tourist buzz.

We were in Rome for 4 nights in April. We stayed in a small B & B, Al Centro di Roma, a couple of blocks from Piazza Navona. We thought it was perfect. The location can't be beat. There are numerous restaurants and we found if you walked just one block away from the Piazza Navona, toward the river, the restaurants were less expensive with even better food. It was an easy walk to the Pantheon, Trevi fountain, Campo di Fiori and many churches. The bus stop and taxi stand were about a 5 minute walk from the B&B.

Happy travels!

We are going in October and staying at a B&B called Innrome. It looks good and we will give our review when we return in November.

We stayed in an apt right off Campo di Fiori and absolutely loved the location. There was a market in the square everyday and we would shop for our groceries. We grabbed our nightly gelato from the square and then wandered around the area. We felt absolutely safe everywhere we went at night. The city takes on a different personality in the evening. The glow of lights up and down the alleys and squares were beautiful. It was actually our favorite time of the day.

Residenza Cellini might meet your needs:

It is a 5-minute walk from Termini but located closer to the Nazionale, Santa Susanna, etc. Has the balcony you seek and a wonderful staff. Good breakfast. Walk to restaurants/sights or take the Metro (just around the corner from Piazza Republica. Rooms are large and well appointed. The beds could be softer, the shower in our room was tight, so that is something to be aware of if you are tall/big. Typical small elevator for Italian-style hotels, but fits your desire for a quaint hotel. For a good dinner when you don't want to go far, try the restaurant Target just around the corner!

What is your budget?

adelheid Jun 19th, 2013 09:03 AM

Thanks all.....definitely looking into all your suggestions.

Our price range right now stand at no more than 200 euro per night.......would prefer something in the 150 Euro or less category :)

In Rome, we've stayed multiple times at the Fontanella Borghese which is about halfway between the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. It's one of two hotels (the other is the nearby Due Torri) owned by a Roman woman who is often on property, so no chain atmosphere. Both properties have fewer than 30 rooms, and I think one or two rooms at the Due Torri open onto a small terrace. It's too early to check rates for May 2014, but you could probably get a double for under 200 euros in one or the other hotel. Currently, they are offering a 5% discount for stays of 3 days or more. Check their websites in Sept/Oct. or send an email now to see if they'll make a reservation that far in advance.

On one of our trips, friends were there at the same time, staying at the Nicholas Inn which is not far from the Colosseum. I didn't like the area as much, but they paid a lower rate.

The apt we stayed in is 120 euro/night for two people in middle season/May.

We love having our own little space to come back to at the end of the day. Grab a few things at the local market for snacks and breakfasts.

Apt is exactly as pictured.

Al centro di Roma is quoting €120 per night in 2013.

We loved the market in Campo di Fiori. We got the best panini of the trip on a side street right off the campo. It was about 2-3 blocks from the B&B.

Happy planning. Rome was our favorite City. I think where we stayed had a lot to do with it!

We were in Rome this past October. We stayed at the Hotel Grifo in the Monti District. Loved the area. It is a neighborhood area that has shops, restaurants, grocery stores, fruit/veg./flower stands, bakery, gelato shop, along with residences. The staff at the hotel was helpful and attentive. We were able to walk to all the tourist sites. Even in the evenings, the Monti area was safe. The master bedroom with terrace is great. Our friends had it and it is on the top floor.

Have fun in Rome.

Residenza Canali ai Coronari is a few blocks off Piazza Navona on a super-charming, pedestrian only street. THE perfect location and the type of quaint, B&B like place you're looking for. Go for the suite with the large private rooftop terrace.

It also has excellent ratings on Tripadvisor.
