Best area to stay in Brussels?

We are a family of 4 adults and 1 3yr old staying for about 5 nights in Brussels. We will be renting an apartment but need help deciding which area to look for one. We will be using public transportation or on foot. We need to be close to the tourist sites and would prefer not to take a bus to the metro to get somewhere since the waiting can actually take up lots of time. We will also be taking the train for several day trips. Is their a region or area of Brussels that is best for us?

Thanks!
Sara

The Sablon is he nicest area in Brussels. You can walk to the Grand Place in a couple of minutes and it is well served by buses. It also has some nice restaurants and bars.

We stayed in the St. Catherine area in late March. Very convenient to the Grand Place, excellent restaurants and convenient to the subway. There was a fish stand - a market and outdoor restaurant of sorts - where we had the best fish in all of Belgiu. We didn't have an apartment but found the hotels/b&bs to be less expensive than many of the higher end areas, such as Louise and Sablon. Good luck and have fun! How I wish we were planning instead of remembering!! Sue

I like Sablon, but it is more high end.

Thanks! We have an apartment less than 1 block off Louise Ave. That area certainly had a plethora of apartments, hard to find them in other areas.
