Best area of the Morvan?
Hi travelers!
We are planning to visit the Burgundy area and finally found a couple houses that we like. We are having trouble choosing between them. We want to be able to drives to places that our kids (2 and 5) would enjoy (lakes, castles, hikes, animal parks), but the attractions are quite spread out. Would anyone be able to advise which of these locations would be better suited? 1. First place is near Lormes, on the Western side of the Morvan, just about 20 mins walk from the town, and seemingly close to a lake 2. The other is in Saint Andreax on the Northern side, about 15km from Avallon (which I understand is a fairly big/interesting town?) We would like to understand what the differences would be but are having trouble figuring it out! In the end, we want a peaceful, nature-focused vacation with opportunities for a few visits to cool places :). Thanks for your help! |
a side note - do not miss Vezelay though not right in the Morvan, a wild area that French friends I know this is so romantic and it is - rolling hills, lakes, etc. But Vezelay is superb - once of the medieval Europe's most popular tourist mecca - but when the holy relic that drew pilgrims here turned out to be a fake (a common thing in those days where pilgrimage sites had to have something to make the pilgrims come here and once here something to worship) - well after the fake was made known the pilgrim trade dried up
and so did the town - slumbering along without much modernization and being just left to basically rot - until the late 1800s when it was all uncovered and put back into its pristine medieval splendor look - the great basilica stunning once again. |
Thank you! I had not heard about this area but will look into it.

Vezelay is indeed well worth a visit. See the photos I took last year at http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...y-170787-2.cfm
