Best Area in Rome - Terminal or Central Piazza Novana area?

This is my 1st trip to Italy. Which area would you recommend for access to sites and shopping?

Also, has anyone stayed at Le Petit in the Terminal area?

One other thing, has anyone been penalized for checking out earlier than planned? I'm making reservations for 4 nights but may only stay 3.

Dee,

Termini is a busy, ugly area, and not at all close to most of the sites, unless you're arriving/leaving by train and want to stay close to the station. I wouldn't!

Piazza Navona is much nicer, as location.

Each hotels has its onw policy regarding earlier check out/cancellations. You'd better ask the hotel reservation dpt. which the policy is.

Surlok

Good morning, Dee
For shopping would suggest the area
around the bottom of the Spanish Steps,
the Corso/Condotti , excellant for
shopping and in good walking distance
to the Vatican, Pza Navona, Trevi and
Rotunda and via Veneto. Pza Navona
area is more limited in shops but in better walking distance to the above
sites. We have most always used the
area of the Corso for its wide range
of good ristorantes. Have not stayed in
the Termini area...Richard of LaGrange Park, *Il.

Just returned from Italy. Termini is a train station, not nice, and not close to anything you'll want to see or do. Piazza Navona is a lovely area, an easy walk to many things. Due Torri, near Piazza Navona, was a lovely hotel, off a little tiny street that is very quiet. Spanish Steps are steps, filled, quite literally, with tourists, into the evening. Although it is adjacent to Via Condotti, where the designer shops are, once I saw what it looked like, filled with all those tourists, I was quite happy we stayed where we did.

You might also want to consider the Pantheon area. Very close to Pza Navona, easy walk to Spanish Steps & Trevi Fountain. We stayed in this area 2 years ago, and it couldn't have been more convenient. Termini is an ugly area - stay somewhere nicer!

I agree with above comments, that Piazza Novona area is wonderful (also Pantheon), but twice I stayed a few blocks from Termini and did find it convenient. I also found inexpensive quite decent hotels there. It's especially convenient if you're taking buses, trains or the subway anywhere; or if you want to walk to the Forum (which I did, several times, being a big Roman Ruins nut).

I agree with those who are turned off by the area around the Termini. I stayed there last spring -- it's ugly and dangerous and far from everything you'll want to see!

No, the termini area is not a prime place to stay during your Rome visit, BUT the entire surrounding area is NOT dangerous--west and north of the station are okay. Those areas are safe and convenient to public transportation and other services. Like Pam, we walked to many areas from there, including the Forum, Colosseum, etc.
Again, the Piazza Navona area is definitely preferred, but don't be scared off just because a hotel is near the termini.
