Bernina express train route

Hi
we are traveling to Zurich for 2 days.
First day we will spend in Zurich and for 2nd day we are planning for Bernina express train adventure.
I will appreciate if someone help me to clear my following queries

1. Can we go for one day tour and coming back to Zurich
2. what is the best route
3. Can we go to Tirano and come back on same day
4. Do we need to cross the boarder if we go to Tirano
5. what is the best possible route and planing for this trip

Regards

All of your question will be answered if you simply visit the website of the railroad which RUNS the Bernina Express: www.rhb.ch

If you stay inside the rail station on the Swiss side of the border in Tirano you won't have to cross any borders and there isn't any barrier to doing so if you wanted to explore the town.

There's a clever way to buy cheap advance-purchase tickets that means you can travel Zurich to Tirano for as little as €29.90 each way - the regular flexible price is more like €80 each way - plus the Bernina express reservation fee (about €14) if you want a seat in the panorama cars.

There is no need to go to Tirano if on a day trip rather abort your journey at the summit stations - Alp Grum and Bernina Ospiz- the scenery after that declines in awesomeness- this will make a day trip more feasbile.

For lots of details on BEX trains and railway check www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com as well as of coursewww.rhb.com - site Dukey gave for the official site of Rhaetische Bahn who runs the railway.

Get off at summit stations -drink up the top of the world atmosphere and return to Chur and Zurich -saving you a few hours of travel thru not so awesome scenery.

Take BEX trains up to summit then just hop ordinary locals back to St Moritz, Chur and Zurich.

If you get off the BEX at the summit stations then just buy a ticket on a local train over the same route and that lets you hop on any local train -run about hourly - no reservations even possible - for going back to St Moritz/Chur -no need to take BEX each way.

You don't need to cross any border if you stay inside the station.>

Well no - the border is a few miles before Tirano and once I saw Italian border police board a Bernina train at the last stop in Switzerland.

Switzerland is now in Schengen so there may not be any border controls.
