Berlin - What to do in a week
My first trip to Europe. I have a week in Germany, staying in Berlin. Anything I shouldn't miss? What about side trips if I have a car? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Berlin has plenty to keep you happy for a week. There are ideas on websites:<BR><BR>http://www.euraide.de/insidetrack.html<BR>http://www.berlin.de/home/English<BR>U-Bahn (metro) map: http://www.reed.edu/~reyn/transport.html#maps<BR>Events lists: http://www.BerlinOnline.de/kultur/tip_magazin/kalender/.<BR><BR>I would not bother with a car. Side trips might include Brandenburg or Dresden, easily reached by two-hourly trains, with restaurant or buffet cars. But as I say, Berlin with Potsdam, will fill a week.<BR><BR>Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.<BR><BR>Ben Haines, London<BR><BR>

Berlin is a favorite of mine--so much to see and do. Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Pergamon Museum with ancient ruin, Templehof Airfield from Berlin Airlift, Museum Island, Potsdam, Olympic Stadium (Jesse Owens fame), KaDeWe Department Store and all of Kurfurstendamstrasse, Unter Der Linden, Reichstag, Brandenberg Gate, Radio Tower, Info Box near the remaining pieces of wall, opera, symphony, good food, friendly people. Dresden is a nice day trip. You can go into Poland.

Get the book BerlinWalks. It is an excellent book that will also take you through old working class neighborhood, explaining the various oddities of pre-war and modern Berlin architecture as well as pointing out more traditional sites.

Barbara -- I don't know what your interests are, but I would recommend you consider visiting the Kathe Kollwitz Museum, a block off Kurfurstendamm at Fasanenstrasse 24. To quote Rick Steves: "This local artist (1867-1945), who experienced much of Berlin's most tumultuous century, conveys some powerful and mostly sad feelings about motherhood, war, and suffering through the black-and-white faces of her art." I loved seeing her work (lots of sculpture) because we don't see the viewpoint of women that often in art. I hope you get a chance to see it.

Prenzlauer Berg, Hackescher Markt, Berlin Mitte with Gendarmenmarkt ...<BR>There is plenty to do in Berlin during a week. Try to go to the theatre or a dance performance, specially in the old "East".<BR>If you like modern architecture you will find Postdamerplatz pretty interesting. The Stasi Museum in Normannenstr is quite good, but I think that they only have german guided tours.<BR>And of course, don´t forget the Jewish Museum. Really impressive.
