Berlin Restaurant for 30th Bday Party?
Can you recommend a nice and chic restaurant for 30th Birthday party celebration in Berlin? Ideally, this restaurant is also located around the bars/clubs that we can go to after dinner. Thanks!!

Here's some blind recommendations:
REFINED TRADITIONAL RESTAURANTS:
LUTTER WEGNER. A winebar/restaurant in Gendarmenmarkt(best one of all their branches). I eat here everytime I'm in Berlin.
BORCHART in Gendarmenmarkt. Wondeful solid refined food without a star chef.
DIEKMANN on Meinekestrasse. Great French-German food. (Charlottenburg) just south of Kudamm.
GUGELHOF on the western side of Kathe-Kolwitz Platz. Loud fun relaxed atmosphere, come as you are to enjoy great Alsatian cuisine at reasonable prices. The german Chancellor(a foodie) took Clinton to eat there.
MODERN AVANT GARDE RESTAURANTS:
FACIL inside Hotel Mandala in Potsdamerplatz, cool contemporary with a gourmet star chef and glass roof. Potsdamerstrasse 3. Very expensive
www.facil.de
GUY: very expensive French gourmet restaurant with contemporary interior balconies. Jaegerstr 60, Potsdamerplatz area.
www.guy-restaurant.de
CAFE DE FRANCE: designed by Phillipe Starcke. Prices are less than half of both previous restaurants. Unter den Linden 62. www.peugeot-avenue.de
BARS:
Victoria Bar: www.victoriabar.de
Newton Bar on Charlottenstr, it looks like a conservative bar with buttoned red leather chairs until you enter and see the large pictures on the wall. More expensive than the previous two.

One idea is to pick a restaurant that you like and then join one of the pub crawl tours for 10 euro per person:

I found this nice website for Berlin popular restaurants: www.locationsite.de/berlin/bdininge.htm
I know you're looking for personal recommendations which I already gave above, however the website will enable you to see what the restaurants look like.
If I remember correctly, you're born in Singapore or Indonesia. I remember a fantastic looking Singaporean restaurant which serves Malay, Indonesian & Indian dishes. It looked great & fun with many colorful balinese umbrellas covering the long festive terrace. If it's your birthday, it might be a great place to celebrate it. I saw it as I was eating right across the street at the Lutter Wegner on Oranienburgerstrasse 53, a block east of Friedrichstrasse. The restaurant has a simple name like "Mirsh" or something like that. (not Amrit which is an Indian restaurant on the same street). I didn't eat there because the slightest smell of curry would ruin my appetite however they serve lots of other things. Oranienburgerstrasse is a fun street as you walk towards Hackeshermarkt, you'll pass lots of bars.

Dax, thank you so much for the replies, and yes your memory served you correctly. I grew up in Indonesia! Right now I'm debating Berlin vs. Amsterdam for the party, and obviously there are tons of Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. But I took notes on the Berlin restaurants. Thanks again! Any other Berlin experts???

DAX--the restaurant is Mirchi, Oranienburgerstr. 50--across from the Arcotel Velvet (where we stayed) and Lutter-Wegner. We dined there last Tuesday evening. Enjoyed it a lot--though I cannot eat curry or anything with cumin, they have a variety of dishes without it.

Thanks for the name Rufus. I thought the restaurant looks like a cool trendy and festive for a celebration. I very much wanted to eat there but I got a wiff of curry just standing to read the menu. I settled eating across the street enjoying the atmosphere from afar. Was the food excellent, good or just OK?
That's a great street to stay on, I stayed at the new Melia by Friedrichstr station and kept walking toward Oranienburgerstr in the evenings.
h2babe: I don't know much about rijstafel in Amsterdam, but we've had an interesting rijstafel in Paris in a very cool restaurant called Djakarta Bali near Les Halles. They had balinese dancing every hour and great lounge music throughout dinner so it felt like a nice lounge club. The French crowd was young & hip as well, mostly people who have been to Bali. So now you have a third city to celebrate the birthday.

Hi, DAX. It was our first go with Malay/Singaporean food, so we wouldn't be the best critics to consult. However, I did enjoy my shrimp dish and everyone else seemed well satisfied.
Even better was an Italian restaurant that a deskclerk in our hotel recommended. It's on Hannoversche Strasse, a block up Friedrichstr. from Oranienburgerstr. Next to a Spanish place. Turn left onto Hannoverschestr. The restaurant is just a few buildings down on the right side just after the Spanish place.
It was Something Rossi or Rossa. Or Rossi or Rossa Something. Think it translated as Red Horse or Red Rider or something like that. Might be a good one for you, h2babe. I had a lamb sausage dish that was Wunderbar! Service was upbeat and efficient. Prosecco with Holunder sirop was a big hit with the ladies.
The general vicinity of that part of the Mitte has lots of dance clubs, jazz, etc.
By the way, in Berlin if you hail a cab and are going under 2 kms., ask for the Kurzstrecke fare--3 euro. We were told it doesn't apply if you get a cab at a stand. With 4 of us, when someone's legs or feet were really aching after a long day's walking, it was cheaper and easier than mass transit.

Wow, thanks again for the recommendations. I have several close friends living in Germany, so logding would be free in Hamburg, Berlin, and Mannheim - possibly Koln, too, depending on how many people I'd have coming with me ;-) And thank you for the restaurant in Paris, hhmm... more ideas ...

OK... here we go, I have 5 wks to go and am getting all of my notes organized. Any last minute thoughts/ideas?
I have heard about a rotating restaurant in Fernsehturm (Alexanderplatzt). Anyone has been there? I am guessing that I will get a pricey menu with so-so food.

I realize that your friends who live in Berlin are going to pick the club for you, but you may enjoy surfing through the different clubs and pictures to see the choices. There is a club guide link. www.berlinonline.de/clubs-und-nightlife/
In our younger days, we used to be part of the underground club scene in Los Angeles/Hollywood. The Berlin scene looks to be a lot more relaxed and inclusive which is good for outsiders.

I just thought of the Schiffbauerdamm area for dinner which you may like. It's just off Friedichstrasse across the river from the Friedrichstr station. There are quite a few restaurants and they were all crowded when I was there. In case you're looking for a fun & medium priced dining option in a river front setting. This one has decent creative food though I only had the beefcheeks appetizer with a drink. www.brechts.de/
