Berlin or Prague?
 

This is Worktowander's DH. We could use a little help. We are spending a two-week trip traveling to Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague and Munich. The first and last parts of the trip are set, We need advice on the middle.

One option would be to spend one full day and two nights in Berlin, giving us three full days in Prague. The other option is to spend two full days in Berlin and two full days in Prague.

I know that neither option gives enough time to truly experience either city, but this is the timetable we have to follow.

We usually avoid "one-night stands" in cities. However, the specific sights we want to see in Berlin could be done in a day pretty easily. We're planning on seeing the Jewish museum, the Reichstaag, checkpoint Charlie and what's left of the wall. We picture Prague as more of a "soak it in" type of place, which takes more time. I'm trying to avoid wishing we had more time in one place and not as much in another.

Any advice on which city deserves more "soaking" time would be appreciated.

Although I have not visited either Prague or Berlin, Prague has appealed to me for a few years now. Wishing to go... From what I've read so far, to me Prague's got more to offer than Berlin in all honesty.

I haven't been to Prague, but Berlin could occupy you for weeks easily. Berlin is a huge city, but from what I've read the Old Town of Prague is pretty compact.

Nonetheless, I suppose you could manage to see all of that in one day, particularly if you prebook a reservation at the cafe at the Reichstag so you can avoid the long lineups. I don't recall the specifics but they are no doubt written somewhere.

I've been to Prague and not Berlin, but I've not heard glowing reviews of Berlin. Supposedly, it is huge, spread out, and everything is under construction. I would like to go to see the World War II stuff but little else I've heard about Berlin appeals to me.

Prague was wonderful, and you would not find three full days there too long in my opinion. At least you would get a day to taste Berlin.

Prague is and has been definately on my list of places to go in my lifetime..

When is this trip going to be?

I like both cities a lot although they are very different. I know I will be in the minority here but I have a preference for Berlin, because to me the city feels much more real, has such a great energy and feeling that it's a fun place to be.

Prague is more compact and you can cover the main sites quite quickly. Berlin is larger, more spread out and it's perhaps less obvious what the main things to see are.

Although you don't have a lot of time, I'd split it equally between these two cities and if you have a couple of days in each, then you'll at least get a good flavour what each city has to offer.

I vote for Prague!!! It is a wonderful city!!!

You do need to take into consideration careful travel planning. When I went I didn't realize that my rail pass didn't include the Czech Republic and almost got kicked off the train!

Been to both. Berlin: big, ugly modern city, one of my least favorite places. Prague: charming, baroque, magical, one of my all time favorites. No contest. Prague!
