Berlin or Munich on New Years Day?

If we assume nearly everything is closed on New Years Day, in which of these cities would you rather be? Why? If not everything is closed, what might one expect to find open other than train stations? Should I buy groceries so I have something to eat on January 1?

I will email my friends in Berlin but I can't imagine that everything is closed. For the sake of your message, assuming everthing is closed: U-Bahn to Templehof Airfield where the Berlin Airlift took place, seeing the Brandenburg Gate, walking the Unter der Linden, going to Potsdam, taking the train 2 hours to Dresden to look around for a few quick suggestions.

Linda--Thank you. I'll be interested to know what your Berliner friends say.

My Berlin friends said "Jan. 1 is a sort of bank holiday in Germany. The stores, shops, banks etc. are closed, with very few exceptions. Theatres, museums etc. are - I think - open as usual on weekends. There is a tendency towards opening shops on holidays, but there are still regulations which have to be obeyed."
