Berlin, liveliest area to stay in

Hello
Considering a trip next October with hubby to Berlin. We've both been to Berlin before (4 years ago) and loved it. We stayed on Kufferdamm strasse the last time in Concorde hotel which was way cheaper back then. I am wondering if there is an area that is livelier at night where there are restaurants and cafes open till late and which is nice to walk around.
Access to shopping is a plus but not a must. We are looking for a 4-5 star hotel.

Thanks

Hi,

For major tourist sites and a good nightlife I'd recommend to plan a stay near the Mitte district. The place is nice to walk around and shop. NH Berlin hotel would be my advice for you in terms of accommodation. You can check reviews and photos on TA.

Potsdamer Platz

Prenzlauer Berg is one of the livelier places to be - kind of like Greenwich Village in NYC - in old East Berlin but not a chic area with younger more Bohemian folk. Well-located also for many sites.

I agree with PalenQ. I stayed in Prenzlauer Berg last fall and loved it for the cafes and restaurants nearby and only a couple of stops away on the U-Bahn to Museum Island, etc. Some really great restaurants there!

Hackescher Markt
Many restaurants, shops, cad
cafes, bars...walking distance to Museum Island.

I agree with Prenzlauer Berg too. And we were pleasantly surprised by the cafe/restaurant scene around Hackescher Markt, where we stayed.

I find PB a bit far from the central Mitte..attractions.

I'd say that Mitte was the place to be if you want everything in one place. Good access to the big brand shopping in the west, but also to the boutiques of Prenzlauerberg and the lively markets of Kreuzberg.

Also it's where the museums and historic centre are and there are a lot of apartments and new hotels, especially near Hauptbahnhof and Friedrichstrasse (which have the best access to stations and airports)

I'd second danon's suggestion of staying near Hackescher Markt.
That neighborhood stays lively till late night or early morning.
Potsdamer Platz is quite dead at night.
Prenzlauer Berg is a huge district. Only certain neighborhoods like Kastanienallee/ Schönhauser Allee have the nightlife. From Hackescher Markt you can get there easily by tram in 10 minutes.
Another "in" area would be around Rosenthaler Platz subway station. (walking distance from Hackescher Markt)
Oranienstr./Skalitzer Str./ Wiener Str. in Kreuzberg is very lively at night - but I doubt you find any 4-5 star hotels there. That's where your 20something kids from Kansas found their (almost universally) bi-lingual watering holes.

But in general, as Berlin is bit spread out, you have many areas which have sufficient nightlife and restaurants. But as there is no one central "entertainment strip", there is no one perfect spot. Also locals tend to hop from district to district at night
